“Although pairing the brothers together is obvious, especially given that they’re the current reigning World Cup champions, Captain Monty does have options with Eddy.”

The Punter eyes success with an Italian first-timer...

With half of the European team composed of debutants and five of the US team containing first-time Ryder Cuppers, this is an interesting market that could well offer up a bit value.

The first thing to consider is how much golf each of the 11 debutants are going to play - Jeff Overton, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler are unlikely to figure in the first set of matches and may not figure at all on day one so are therefore dismissed from the reckoning.

Of the remaining Americans, Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson could see some early action but that may well depend on how they've both recovered from their disappointing FedEx Cup exploits.

Colin Montgomerie has said that everyone will play on Friday
and if that's not just gamesmanship then only four players will play twice, so to consider a European in this market we've got to pick someone Monty really likes. Martin Kaymer could well feature twice and Rory McIlroy is such an obvious partner for Graeme McDowell it's not hard to envisage him playing in both sets of day one matches, but the value may well be with the Italian brothers, Francesco and Edoardo Molinari.

They make a very obvious pairing and Monty has made no secret of his desire to play them together. At first glance, with Francesco trading bigger than his older brother, he looks the value play but I'm going to plump for Edoardo.

Although pairing the brothers together is obvious, especially given that they're the current reigning World Cup champions, Captain Monty does have options with Eddy. He's been paired with Miguel Angel Jimenez half a dozen times or more on the European Tour and the pair get on fantastically well and have both expressed a desire to be paired together in Wales.

Eddy has match play experience too; in 2005 he became the first European to win the U.S Amateur title since 1911. His flexibility re pairings, and the momentum he comes to the event with, after his close shave in Switzerland and his spectacular success at the Johnnie Walker Championship, which prompted Monty to enthuse "I don't think I've seen a finish of that quality, under such pressure, by anyone, ever!" make him a strong candidate at a very fair price.

Verdict: Back Edoardo Molinari @ [9.4]
