Hunter Mahan – The Punter’s pick for Top US scorer

“Two years ago Hunter Mahan took to the Ryder Cup like a duck to water - he’s in fair form and he looks a very fair price.”

The Punter hopes the Tiger will roar and Hunter will soar...

I've already detailed my theory as to why I think Tiger Woods could be a value play in this market but if he still hasn't found his A game, and let's face it that's more than a faint possibility, and he doesn't manage to take his big chance of redemption, I've had a look to see if there's any further value.

I'm going to ignore the five rookies
, I don't think Jeff Overton, Bubba Watson or Rickie Fowler will feature enough to be worth considering and Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson have their disappointing FedEx collapses to overcome.

Corey Pavin will be looking to his seasoned Ryder Cuppers to show the way and so will I, but apart from Woods I can't see any value in the obvious candidates.

Phil Mickelson can't seem to find his form for more than the odd round, Steve Stricker was dreadful at the Tour Championship, Jim Furyk has a pretty unimpressive Ryder Cup record and Stewart Cink has been largely out of form ever since he won the Open Championship last year, so that just leaves Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan.

I'm tempted by Zach, he certainly didn't disgrace himself on his only previous Ryder Cup outing, winning two of the four points he played for and let's face it, he was always up against it in his singles match against Darren Clarke and the entire Irish population, so I certainly wouldn't put anyone off him but I've decided to play Hunter again.

I say again because he did me a big favour two years ago when he took to the Ryder Cup like a duck to water as a juicy [20.0] shot. He's not quite such a great price this time around and he doesn't have his partner Justin Leonard to play with but he's in fair form and he looks a very fair price.

Verdict: Back Hunter Mahan @ [11.0]
