Lee Westwood has been Europe's most consistent and inspirational player this week

Europe lead the USA by three points going into the singles after bossing the third session in which they took five-and-a-half points from a possible six. It would take a Brookline-like effort for the USA to pull this one back. The Punter talks us through it all...

3.20 - It's all over! Mahan can't make par and the celebrations begin. Well done Europe! The final score is 14 ½ - 13 ½ to Monty's men.

3.17 Mahan completely duffs his chip - the occasion has got to him but it's understandable

3.14 - McDowell finds the collar on the par 3 17th and Mahan's tee shot comes up two clubs short - the end is definitely nigh now - what a match!

3.09 Incredible scenes as McDowell birdies 16 to go two up with two to play. What a year for G-Mac!

3.05 - Zach has crossed the line against Pod andthe score now reads 13 1/2 - 13 1/2!

G-Mac finds the green in two as Mahan hacks out - advantage Europe. Boy this is close!

3.02 - A great lag putt from Edoardo, gutsy indeed, but Rickie makes BIRDIE and the match is halved - an incredible performance from the young American!

2.58 - Both Molinari and Fowler are now on the green. The Italian is a lot further from the pin though...and just to remind you, the scores currently Europe 13 USA 12

Advantage G-Mac on 16! Mahan is deep in the rough, whilst the Irishman's nailed his drive.

2.55 -So just to summarize quickly -

G-Mac is one up with three to play

Zach Johnson is three up with three to play against Pod and in the last match, Molinari leads by one and both players have layed, but Moli's in the rough!

2.53 - Europe have been matched at [1.03], there now [1.29]

2.51 - On the 18th, Molinari lays up, but into the rough...He's stuttering.

2.49 This is definitely not over by a long chalk; Mahan now looks fav to win the 15th hole!

2.43 Rickie Fowler makes his third birdie in-a-row and all of a sudden he could scrape a half! Edoardo Molinari now goes up 18 with the slenderest of leads...

Meanwhile, Lefty finally finishes off Hanson, winning 4 & 2 and the score reads Europe 13 USA 12

2.34 A pair of pars for G-Mac and Mahan and the Irishman goes to the 15th two up - it looks highly likely that it's going to be up to this final pairing to determine the match outcome.

Edoardo goes to the 17th two up against Fowler and the other two matches look sure to go the Americans...

2.17 - One more re-cap - the current score is Europe 13 USA 11 with just four matches still going...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - USA win 2 & 1
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - Match halved
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe wins 1 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA win 6 & 4
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe win 5 & 4
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - USA win 3 & 2
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe win 4 & 3
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - USA win 4 & 3
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 3 up
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 4 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 4 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 2 up

2.12 Fisher three-putts from nowhere and Jeff Overton wins 3 & 2, as Mahan gets one back. He's now just two down and it looks likely it's going to be down to last match to see if the Americans can cling on to the trophy.

2.05 Miguel wins his first ever Ryder Cup singles match, and he's done it in style, disposing of big hitting Bubba Watson by 4 & 3. The guys a legend!

2.00 - Latest scaores again...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - USA win 2 & 1
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - Match halved
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe wins 1 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA win 6 & 4
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe win 5 & 4
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - USA 2 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 3 up
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - USA 4 up
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 3 up
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 3 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 4 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 3 up

1.52 Mahan misses a tiddler for birdie on the 11th and that could be it. He hasn't made a birdie all day and that's simply not good enough. G-Mac's now three up.

Meanwhile, Fisher scrambles a half after finding water on 15, but he's still two down with three to play.

1.46 - Fisher's gone, he's now wet on the 15th. If G-Mac stutters against Mahan the Americans could yet retain the trophy.

1.44 - Woods makes another, he's now six under par for his last five holes, quite incredible! And francesco has no chance.

1.40 - Fisher is gasping for air now, and Overton has gone two up...It's all down to Mig, Edoardo and G-Mac for Monty now, but all three look safe.

13.32 Donald wins 1 up and the scoreboard reads Europe 12 America 9. The end is nigh for Corey's charges now.

13.30 - Donald looks favourite to win his match now and It looks like Miguel and Edoardo are going to close this out - the pair are both in control and leading by three.

Get the champagne ready Monty!

1.24 - Woods is HOT HOT HOT, he's now holed out from the 12th fairway to go three up!

Edoardo is really turning the screw on Fowler, he's now three up through 11.

1.21 - It looked like Rory was favourite to win his match on 18 after finding the greenside bunker in two, but he failed to get out of it first time around and in the end needed a really good up and down to square the match. He's a lucky boy, it was half a point gifted by Cink

1.16 It's been a busy five minutes so here's another scores update...Is Woods back? Looks like he might be, that's some run he's on.....

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - USA win 2 & 1
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - All square playing 18
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 1 up playing 18
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA win 6 & 4
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe win 5 & 4
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - All square
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 3 up
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - USA 2 up
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 2 up
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 2 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 3 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 2 up

1.02 Poulter guaranteed Monty he'd win today and he hasn't gone back on his word. Pumped up doesn't quite sum him up and he must have burst blood vessels somewhere! He's opened the gap back up by beating Kuchar 5 & 4.

1.00 Cink has let Rory off the hook again on the 17th with another very short birdie chance missed and they go up 18 all square.

12.55 And it's about time we had another look at the scores...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - USA win 2 & 1
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - All square
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 2 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA win 6 & 4
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe 4 up
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - Europe 1 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 2 up
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - All square
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 1 up
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 2 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 2 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 3 up

12.49 The leaderboard shows that there's just a point in it as Dustin Johnson beats Kaymer 6 & 4.

12.47 Steve Stricker puts the first point on the board with a 2 & 1 win in what was a cracker of a match. Stricker had to be at his very best to get the better of Lee.

12.44 - There's an incredible turnaround on the drivable par 4 15th, as McIlroy makes a birdie three after missing the green with his tee-shot, before Cink, on the green in one, is asked to make his birdie putt from just two feet...He misses and the pair are back to all square!

Dustin Johnson goes five up with five to play and Westwood looks doomed against Stricker but G-Mac's bringing up the rear superbly; he's now three up on Mahan.

12.33 - Poulter chips in for eagle to take control against Kuchar, as Jimenez goes two up against Bubba and Edoardo takes the lead against Fowler.

European momentum is growing fast and they're back down to [1.10]

12.26 Fair play to Pod, he's stuck in there against Zach and the pair are now level, whilst in the top match Stricker goes two up.

12.17 and it looks like the momentum's back with the Europeans as they win holes all over the place. Poults, Hanson, Mig all making gains...

12.15 - A quick word on Donald. He's still two up thanks to two brilliant putts on the last two holes and now he's nailed his tee-shot on the par three 13th. He's been superb.

12.12 - Latest score again, G-Mac's doubled his lead in the final match and that could be massive. If he was losing the skids would definitely be under Monty's men...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - USA 1 up
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - USA 1 up
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 2 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA 2 up
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe 2 up
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - Europe 1 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - All square
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - Europe 1 up
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - All square
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 3 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 1 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 2 up

12.04 - The tide is definitely turning...Dustin Johnson goes further clear, whilst Overton and Woods both peg holes back.

12.00 - Westwood loses the 13th as McIlroy levels his match with Cink, but then finds water on the 13th! Jimenez has been pegged back against Bubba but has a great chance on the 7th. That looks like it could be a really crucial tie.

Europe are drifting out now, currently [1.19]...

11.50 - Westwood's wet and looks like going behind...

11.47 - Molinari makes yet another putt and goes two up on Woods and Rory makes a brilliant birdie putt on the 11th to half the hole, just as the Americans looked to building some momentum, with Stricker levelling the top match with Westwood and Furyk getting one back against Donald.

11.39 - They're all out on the course now, so let's have another recap...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - Europe 1 up
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - USA 1 up
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 3 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA 2 up
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe 2 up
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - Europe 2 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 1 up
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - Europe 1 up
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 1 up
10.52 - Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson - USA 3 up
11.05 - Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson - USA 2 up
11.17 - Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan - Europe 1 up

11.32 - Somehow Lee Westwood' eagle putt stays above ground and the 11th is halved in birdie fours in what's turning out to be a great tussle.

Lefty takes control against Peter Hanson and he's now three up through three and Graeme McDowell wins the first hole against Hunter Mahan.

11.24 Padraig Harrington loses the 1st, whoever wins this event, Pod over Paul Casey and Justin Rose was a poor decision.

Woods gets one back against Francesco and Fisher finds the water, very unluckily, on the 5th but Overton fails to make par and Fisher's still two up!

11.15 - Europe now trade at just [1.05]. There are some intrepid punters about, that looks a little short to me.

11.07 - Stricker holes from 10 feet for birdie on the 9th but Westwood follows him in and still leads by one. Lee's a colossus for the Europeans, that was a big putt.

Phil Mickelson holes a bomb on the 1st and goes one up

11.04 - Latest scores..

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - Europe 1 up
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart - USA 1 up
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 3 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA 2 up
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - Europe 1 up
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - Europe 2 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 1 up
10.29 - Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods - Europe 2 up
10.41 - Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler - Europe 1 up

11.00 - Cink goes back in front with a birdie at the 8th

Kaymer looks in trouble on the 5th, Bubba Watson squares his match on the 2nd hole and Edoardo Molinari wins the 1st hole against Rickie Fowler.

Francesco makes birdie on the 2nd and goes two up!

10.50 - Fisher goes two up with another birdie at the 3rd - This could be a bloodbath!

10.48 - A fired-up Poults birdies the 3rd to go one up and Francesco Molinari nudges in a short birdie putt at the 1st to go one up against Tiger.

Momentum is now firmly with the home side as they shorten to [1.12]

Let's have a quick scores update, the action's fast and furious now as more matches get under way...

09.05 - Lee Westwood v Steve Stricker - Europe 1 up
09.17 - Rory McIlroy v Stewart Cink- All Square
09.29 - Luke Donald v Jim Furyk - Europe 2 up
09.41 - Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson - USA 1 up
09.53 - Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar - All Square
10.05 - Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton - Europe 1 up
10.17 - Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson - Europe 1 up

10.42 - Kaymer gets one back...

10.33 - Kaymer looks out of sorts again today and a bogey on the 3rd puts Dustin Johnson two up

Rory squares his match with a birdie
- that's a real ding-dong battle

Jimenez wins the 1st - Is the momentum starting to go Europe's way?

10.25 What a turnaround in the top match - Cink now one up through five.

Ross Fisher has picked up where he left off, making a superb birdie on the 1st to go one up.

10.15 Cink levels his match with Rory, Westwood takes the lead with a birdie on the 5th and Donald goes one up on the third and finally the prices change slightly in the outright market with the Europeans tightening up.

10.06 Dustin wins the 1st with a par and Cink has a chance to square his tie with Rory on the 4th, but Furyk's wet on the 3rd!

10.01 - Westwood hits back - a birdie at the 4th squares the match.

Back on the 1st Kaymer looks shaky and likely to lose the hole

9.56 - Cink halves the deficit with a superb birdie at the 3rd. Rory just one up now.

9.49 - Westwood's only weakness, his chipping, again causes problems as he duffs a chip on the 3rd - Stricker goes one up with a par

Rory marches on though, a par is good enough at the 2nd to take him 2 up.

Whilst on the 1st Furyk gets up and down and the hole is halved

9.36 - Stricker misses. It looked in but just drifted right of the cup at the death. That match is still all square.

And back on the first, its advantage Europe as Furyk can only hack out of the rough and Donald finds the green in two.

9.32 - Yet more fine Welsh humour as cries of oggy oggy oggy are changed to foggy foggy foggy as Jim Furyk peers down the misty fairway.

Up on the green, Rory makes birdie to go one up!

But on the 2nd Stricker has a chance to hit back in the first match - he has a birdie putt of around eight feet, Westwood hasn't reached the green in three.

9-20 -Rather worryingly the fog looks to be getting worse!

Stricker gets up and down from the greenside bunker and Westwood two putts very well from the front off the green, as back at the tee someone pipes up "You've got Big-Mac, we've got Little-Mac!" to much amusement.

Cink drives to the right of the fairway and Rory follows him..

9.05 - and we're off...

Steve Stricker finds the left fairway and Lee Westwood's drive just drifts off the right fairway.

    Morning Steve.

Looks like we're in for a fun morning. Plenty of amusing antics on the first tee. Not sure if that's because of what's about to happen or whether it's because everyone's thrown a sicky!

As for the golf, well I'm hoping Europe get 16.5 or 17 points today - those are the scores I've backed in the Correct Score market.

    Go Rory!!!!

  2. Mike | 04 October 2010

Steve, the way Westwood, Poulter, Donald and Fisher have started I think my only dilemma is when to crack open my first celebratory can!

Terrific match between Cink and McIlroy as you say.

    Great entertainment.

  3. Mike | 04 October 2010

Crazy stuff from Rory there... AGAIN!!!

Steve, as you know from our chats the biggest criticism I have of Rory is his course management. After getting back to All Square, to go for that pin on the 13th was criminal.

USA holing some putts now, it's going to get very interesting if Westwood and Rory don't put some points (or even half points) on the board.
