Ignore the last three wide margin results, it's going to be tight says the Punter....

Anyone scanning the results of the last three Ryder Cups would be forgiven for thinking that we're unlikely to see a close encounter in Wales. The last three renewals have been one-sided affairs, where the winning teams have maintained comfortable leads from the word go.

Having come from behind to win by three points at the Belfry in 2002, the Europeans went to Oakland Hills Country Club, Michigan as the outsiders two years later but they got off to a fast start and battered the US Team 18 ½ - 9 ½.

Two years later Darren Clarke and co rode a tidal wave of emotions at the K Club to smash the Americans by the exact same score. From the moment Tiger Woods found water off the first tee the US were in big trouble and nothing was going to stop the Europeans that week. With Darren Clarke playing so brilliantly and bravely so soon after the tragic loss of his wife Heather, the result never seemed in doubt.

The Americans then gained some desperately needed revenge at Valhalla two years ago, when they won by five.

There were reasons for the large differentials at the last three renewals though - from Hal Sutton's bungling captaincy in 2004, to the inspirational Clarke in front of his home fans, on to the revved up revenge seeking Americans at Valhalla, but that's not the norm and the chances are it will be much tighter at Celtic Manor.

In the seven Ryder Cups between 1987 and 1999 no team won by more than two points and I fancy we could again see another nerve tingling finish this time around. A play on 14-14 or the draw in the outright market, with a view to trading in-running to retrieve stakes looks the best way to go.

Verdict: Back Tie in the Winner market or 14-14 in the Correct Score market @ [13.5] and lay-back stakes in-running at [3.5]
