The American believes there will not be an asterisk against this year's champion's name.

American golfer Boo Weekley says that this year's Open at Royal Birkdale will not be any poorer for Tiger Woods' absence.

The American was speaking on the eve of the 137th Open which begins tomorrow. Woods pulled out of the remainder of the season, as well as this year's Ryder Cup, with a knee injury after his play-off triumph at the US Open.

Some have said that whoever wins at Royal Birkdale will have to ask themselves if they would have won had Woods been playing but Weekley disagrees.

He said: "You have still got the best players in the world here. Tiger Woods is not the whole tour."
