McDowell, Goosen and Garcia tucked in close behind in the betting. Joe Dyer reports...
With the first round of The Open drawing to a close Adam Scott stands at the top of the betting following a tricky day on the Birkdale links.
Scott's steady play saw him through while several of the the world's top players struggled with a strong wind and rain. At 18.06 tonight, Scott trades at [8.2].
Close behind are Graeme McDowell, Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia, trading at around [14.0]
But it was a nightmare day for major winners Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson who face a battle to make the cut standing at +10 and +9 respectively. Hunter Mahan, Vijay Singh and John Daly all stand at ten over and are likely to make the return flight home on Friday night.
It was the early starters who got the worse of the weather on day one and they suffered accordingly with some huge scores recorded. The bad news is the rain is forecast to arrive tomorrow afternoon meaning those who felt rain on Thursday are likely to get it again on Friday.
