Thongchai Jaidee – a great desert player at a great price
“Thongchai Jaidee shouldn’t be big enough for this column at this week’s Dubai Desert Classic.”
He came mighty close last year and the Punter thinks the Thai veteran can do so again....
With Paul Krishnamurty away, I've been asked to step in and see if I can dig out a triple-figure priced winner, or, as the new trading system now allows it, a contender that trades short enough to profit from. And digging one out came easily this week; my only worry was how big Thongchai Jaidee would trade, because he shouldn't be big enough for this column at this week's Dubai Desert Classic.
The Thai veteran led from halfway here last year and came very close to winning - missing a short birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have secured him a place in the play-off - eventually won by Miguel-Angel Jimenez.
He's a recent winner, having taken the Cambodian Open just before Christmas. His 8th placed finish at the Dubai World Championship a fortnight earlier shows what a great desert player he is and his tied 19th placed last week in Qatar was his best effort to date in 2011 and an ideal warm up.
Thongchai's a prolific winner in Asia who has bettered with age but he's not the safest of conveyances in the mix - as that short birdie putt miss last year on the 72nd hole demonstrated, but as we're not necessarily looking for a certain winner with this column now, he's a confident selection to trade short enough to make a profit.
