Gary Boyd at Sunningdale on Monday
“Boyd’s missed his last three cuts, so on the face of it the layers aren’t being generous offering up odds of [150.0] but are they aware he shot rounds of 65 and 66 to comfortably qualifying for the Open Championship today? I suspect the answer’s no.”
Will Gary be Boyd by Open Championship qualification? At [150.0] it's worth chancing he will be...
Somewhat frustratingly, last week's Saab Wales Open winner, Alexander Noren, had been a pick for this column at the BMW PGA at Wentworth just the week before, where he disappointingly missed the cut.
That was enough to put many a punter off the talented Swede in Newport but anyone that had dug a little deeper may well have fancied his chances on the back of his efforts at last Monday's US Open qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey. Rounds of 67 and 72 saw him qualify for next week's major and it was just the fillip to give him confidence heading for the valleys.
I'm hoping lightening can strike twice and I'm taking a chance on a pair of very promising young players that will head to Turin buoyed (or should I say Boyd) after making next month's Open Championship at Royal St George's after qualifying today at Sunningdale.
South African young gun George Coetzee blasted rounds of 68 and 65 earlier today to get into a five-way play-off which he duly won. He's a player that I'm very keen to keep the right side of and he's got course form to boot, having finished last year's event with an impressive 66 to climb up into a tie for 13th. Qualifying in the manner that he has must surely give him a boost and he looks well worth a wager at [130.0].
Gary Boyd didn't fare quite so well last year- he made the cut but performed poorly on the weekend and finished tied 52nd. He's missed his last three cuts too, so on the face of it the layers aren't being generous offering up odds of [150.0] but are they aware he shot rounds of 65 and 66 to comfortably qualifying for the Open Championship today? I suspect the answer's no.
Boyd's somewhat unlucky not to have already won on Tour. He was beaten by Peter Hanson at last year's Czech Open in a play-off and he traded at odds of just [1.28] at the Castello Masters last October before getting collared by Matteo Manassero late on. I'm not surprised he's had a quiet start to 2011 after those disappointments but maybe he's about ready to burst back on the scene. Take the [150.0] and cross your fingers.
