When in the mood Fredrik Andersson Hed can go very low indeed
"[100.0] chance Coetzee tops the birdie average stats amongst this line-up over the past 12 months and second pick, Fredrik Andersson Hed, ranks fourth in that same category, and has made his mark at enormous prices before."
A pro-am, you say? On a par-72, sub-7,000 yard tourist course? What you need, sir (or maam of course), is a man who knows how to go low and Paul Krishnamurty has found a pair who fit the bill
To say that punters are scratching their heads about this week's European Tour event would be something of an understatement, and not just because the Trophee Hassan II moves to two new venues, neither of which have ever hosted a tournament which we can study.
Equally as big a deterrent towards backing the likeliest names is that, to be blunt, there aren't any. Sunday's comedy of errors at the Andalucia Open, played out between various rank outsiders, spoke volumes about the standard of these second-division European Tour events. Such are the tiny differentials in quality at this level, there are at least 50 plausible candidates, perhaps even twice that number.
All of that points towards backing outsiders. The one obvious angle is that scoring should be low. As a pro-am, the course is bound to be set up easily, so as not to humiliate the amateurs. Indeed, at a different venue last year, Rhys Davies' winning total was 266. Moreover, as a sub-7,000 yard par-72, Golf du Palais Royal is hardly a beast either.
Therefore I'm opting for a couple of birdie-machine types. Firstly, George Coetzee gave this column a decent run once last year, and he has continued to make headway over the winter. Coetzee won his fourth South African title in February, and played well in similar standard Euro events over the past fortnight, finishing 13th in Sicily and hitting three good rounds out of four in Andalucia. The key number is that this [100.0] chance tops the birdie average stats amongst this line-up over the past 12 months.
The second pick, Fredrik Andersson Hed, ranks fourth in that same category, and has made his mark at enormous prices before. Since the beginning of 2010, Fredrik has won the Italian Open, finished runner-up at over [500.0] at Wentworth, and registered a not too shabby tally of seven top-tens. He is a notoriously inconsistent character, so I'm happy to overlook his latest two missed cuts, especially as his second round last week was a decent 67.
The plan is to have 1.5 units on each man, then place a couple of lay orders at [10.0] and [3.0].
