Thorbjorn Olesen - could he be the classy youngster to contend this year?

“I’ve been tremendously impressed by young Dane, Thorbjorn Olesen, and in time I can see him being a multiple winner and a world class player.”

With Paul Krishnamurty on a well-earned break, Steve Rawlings steps in on the quest for triple-figure success, with two picks at the Omega European Masters...

Although Charley Hoffman stormed to victory at last year's Deutsche Bank Championship at pre-event odds of [300.00], most years the event goes to a well-fancied player. Five of the eight winners to date have been ranked in the top three in the world rankings at the time of their victory and Olin Browne, back in 2005, was the only other surprise winner of this week's US event.

In contrast, over the last five years at the Omega European Masters, only last year's winner, Miguel Angel Jimenez, could be described as well-touted beforehand, so it made sense to concentrate on the field lining up in Switzerland on Thursday.

We've seen some shock winners of late and we've also witnessed some great efforts by some top class youngsters. Rory McIlroy really should have secured his breakthrough win here in 2008 but blew his chance on the final hole. Alex Noren, champion in 2009, had bags of potential back then and is now showing his talent in full. Only last year, top drawer Italian youngster Matteo Manassero challenged all week before eventually finishing third.

Thorbjorn makes his event debut this week but he does have form in Switzerland under his belt. He led last year's Credit Suisse Challenge at the Golf Sempachersee complex on the Challenge Tour with a round to go, before dropping down to 14th with a poor final round.

He comes here on the back of a couple of missed cuts but that's why we're getting the big odds and it doesn't put me off. He's finished runner-up three times already this season - at the inaugural event, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, the BMW Italian Open, following a 50th placed finish in Wales and at the Open de France, after a missed cut in Germany.

This time 12 months ago Brett Rumford was licking his wounds after Edoardo Molinari had birdied the last three holes of the Johnnie Walker Championship to cruelly deny him success there. It's fair to say he's not in that sort of form this term but he does have plenty of course form.

He won the event back in 2007 and led at the halfway stage a year later. It took him three rounds to shake off the Johnnie Walker hangover last year but he finished the event with an impressive 64, which lifted him up to a tie for 13th. Let's hope the crisp clear mountain air can inspire him once more.
