When the weather is misbehaving, Wood seems to enjoy himself
"Chris Wood clearly likes playing wind-exposed layouts, twice making the top-five in the Open, and finishing runner-up behind soon-to-be Open champ Darren Clarke at Pula earlier this year."
Links lover Chris Wood is one of three selections for Paul Krishnamurty in his weekly attempt to nail a winner at [100.0] or more
As one of the venues used regularly during this tournament's 99-year history, we should know what to look for at Hilversum GC. This is a short, exposed par-70 with narrow fairways, which place a large premium on tee-to-green accuracy. Though not a links, exposure to the North Sea wind is the course's principal defence, and most previous winners had proven pedigree in top links events. Greens in regulation is by far the most important stat to follow.
Normally those conditions would reduce the likelihood of an upset, but outsiders have won before at Hilversum. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano was a big price before landing his breakthrough title here in 2005, and runaway 2002 champ Tobias Dier remains one of the unlikeliest winners in Euro Tour history. More to the point, the presence of Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer in this field means there is no shortage of classy characters in our triple-figure price range.
Given the importance of greens in regulation, there is a strong argument to take odds of [140.0] about the man who leads those stats over the past 12 months - Richie Ramsay. Regular readers may recall Ramsay gave this column a great run for our money, hitting the second profit-maximising lay target, in the French Open. He hasn't missed a cut since, and as a proven winner already, looks exactly the type to pop up again at big prices when conditions best suit. Ramsay won't mind any wind either, and has shown links prowess before in the Dunhill Links Championship.
In addition to Ramsay, I'm going for two very capable players who fared pretty well last year. Chris Wood, a [110.0] chance this week, finished 11th on that occasion, and while he has been disappointing when presented with chances to win, the young Englishman remains one of the best players without a title to his name. Chris clearly likes playing wind-exposed layouts, twice making the top-five in the Open, and finishing runner-up behind soon-to-be Open champ Darren Clarke at Pula earlier this year.
Finally a man who has been seriously frustrating for this column. David Horsey was tipped for the Andalucia Open, only to win the next week at just below our price range in Morocco. Then he was re-selected for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and despite spending almost the entire weekend in contention, somehow his odds never shortened to our lay target. Having won a title in consecutive European campaigns, he is well worth persevering with when available at odds around [120.0]. Horsey was fourth at Hilversum last year, and as one of the most accurate players around, can expect to challenge regularly in this event throughout his career.
The trading plan is to lay out six units in total on this trio, then place two lay orders on each at [10.0] and [3.0] to bank profit should any of them shorten up.
