Brendon McCullum is Kochi's blaster
"Owais Shah, England’s forgotten man, may not get picked but if he does he could be stonking value for top runscorer"
Ed Hawkins previews this contest at the Nehru stadium as we prepare for our first look at one of the new franchises
Kochi
One thing we know we will get from Kochi in their first season is commitment. It is one of the reasons why they are outright selection. Mahela Jayawardene leads while much is expected of Brendon McCullum up top. It would be a surprise, though, if Muttiah Muralitharan was fit.
Bangalore
In Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB De Villiers, Bangalore have batsmen to fear. They have bowlers to fear, too in Dirk Nannes and Zaheer Khan. Daniel Vettori, who tends to hobble around a bit these days, holds it all together.
Match odds
Kochi are the outsiders at [2.20] with Bangalore [1.73]. We would favour a back-to-lay of the home side at the Nehru stadium because we are sure they have enough quality in the XI to trade below [2.00].
Bangalore look to be too reliant on Dilshan and De Villiers for runs and if Kochi were able to nip those two out cheaply we could be in business. In RP Singh, Kochi have a fine exponent of new ball bowling.
Top Bangalore batsman
Dilshan and De Villiers will be taking up a large percentage of this book and if they are too short for your liking, other options include Virat Kohli, Mohammad Kaif or Vettori himself.
Top Kochi batsman
Owais Shah, England's forgotten man, may not get picked but if he does he could be stonking value for top runscorer. Jaywardene will be favourite and we expect McCullum to go off around [4.00]. Not a bad wager itself because he tends to be at his best at the start of tournaments.
Best bet: Kochi back-to-lay at [2.20]
