Trott and Cook took the game away from Sri Lanka in Monday's evening session.
"Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott weathered the storm and, in a short space of time, all but batted Sri Lanka out of the match."
Despite the morning being a washout there was plenty of action on day four at Lord's and a definite sense of deja vu is emerging.
With no play possible on Monday morning the draw looked to be the inevitable outcome of this second Test. But a solid bowling display, coupled with some brilliant fielding in the slips and a Sri Lankan middle-order collapse means that England can still win this Test match and wrap up the series.
When Steven Finn found the outside edge of Mahela Jaywardene Sri Lanka were 394-4 and still looked on course to build a notable first innings lead. But only Prasanna Jayawardene could add any runs of real substance to the total and the tourists were bowled out for 479 - seven runs short of England's total.
When Andrew Strauss went for a duck to another left-arm seamer Sri Lanka were right in the match, despite being bowled out cheaply. But despite the ball nipping around early in the innings Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott weathered the storm and all but batted Sri Lanka out of the match.
There was a short, arguably unnecessary, delay in the evening session due to bad light but England maintained an impressive run rate throughout the day to build a lead of 156. They'll be looking to add another 150 to the total tomorrow before putting Sri Lanka in to bat with the hope and belief that their batsmen still haven't exonerated the ghosts of that Cardiff collapse.
The draw is understandably the heavy favourite at odds of [1.09] but England look a worthwhile back-to-lay option at [15.0].
