Betting.betfair's Ed Hawkins was rewarded with one of the biggest awards in the sports journalism industry last night. Find out what he won, why he won it and who he beat...

Betting.betfair's star cricket tipster Ed Hawkins was rewarded for his entertaining writing and high-class betting recommendations by scooping up the Victor Chandler Sports Betting Writer Of The Year Award last night. This is one of the newest categories in the annual Sports Journalist Association Awards and was won back-to-back by the Racing Post's Steve Palmer in 2008 and 2009.

Ed held off competition from the likes of Racing Post football guru Kevin Pullein and Daily Mirror's laugh-a-sentence Derek McGovern to bring home the award. Those who have read Ed's match previews, team guides and live Test Match blogs - including through-the-night updates on everything from batting averages, his choice of breakfast cereal and In-Play trading opportunities during the Ashes will feel this is no more than he deserves.

Among his tipping highlights of 2010, Ed was very sweet on England winning the Ashes at [2.9] and a little earlier on in the year successfully recommended Mahela Jayawardene to finish as the top runscorer of the T20 World Cup at odds of [27.0].

His recommendation of South African wicket-keeper batsman AB De Villiers to finish top of the pile at the ongoing Cricket World Cup at odds of [30.0] is also looking good with the right-hander currently second in the standings on 266 runs and currently trading as the favourite.

We asked Ed what he made of his latest achievement.

"It was a tremendous honour just to be nominated alongside some very fine writers so to win was very special. I must thank the guys at betting.betfair for giving me the opportunity to write and for all the hard work they put in."

And of betting.betfair he said:

"With the in-running live blogs and analysis that we do I think the site is a unique tool for punters and hopefully the award just confirms our position as an authority"
