Betfair preview Wimbledon Day 7
IT'S CATCH-UP day at Wimbledon today with Rafael Nadal trying to get his third-round match started after Saturday's near washout. Roger Federer can put the pressure on the young Spaniard if he can get through his fourth-round match later in the day. But heavy rain showers are predicted (again) so there is an 11am start.
Here are Betfair's Four to Follow on Day 7 at The Championships:
Andy Roddick (USA, 3) v Paul-Henri Mathieu (France)
Britain has no-one left but France have four men (and three women) still in contention going into the second week. Paul-Henri Mathieu had never been beyond the second round in four previous visits to Wimbledon. Now he has matched his Grand Slam best to date with a place in the fourth round after beating 17th seed David Ferrer in straight sets and 15th seed Ivan Ljubicic in four sets.
Today on Centre Court he is up against third seed Andy Roddick. Can he withstand the American's powerful serve and volley game? Well, he's done it before, winning their only meeting two years ago. But that was on a hard court at the Montreal Masters and this is Wimbledon's grass.
Roddick, a year younger at 24 and an inch taller at 6ft 2in, is fancied at 1.23 with Betfair to make the quarter-finals. Mathieu is on offer at 5.2 to upset the former world number one and continue his good run.
Richard Gasquet (France, 12) v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France)
France are guaranteed at least one player through to the last eight as 12th seed Richard Gasquet takes on exciting new talent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Court One.
Gasquet, 21 two weeks ago, is ranked 14 in the world to the man from Le Mans' 110. But Tsonga, making his Wimbledon debut at 22, is on the rise as he showed on the Challenger circuit this year and in his win over Ivo Karlovic in straight sets in the Surbiton final at the start of June.
Gasquet and Tsonga have never met on the ATP Tour but Gasquet is trading at 1.48 with Betfair to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. Tsonga is available at 3 to cause another upset after toppling Tim Henman's conqueror, Feliciano Lopez, in straight sets. Roddick or Mathieu awaits the winner.
Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden, 19) v Wayne Arthurs (Australia)
Now for the battle of the oldies as 35-year-old Jonas Bjorkman takes on 36-year-old Wayne Arthurs, who is playing his last Wimbledon in a delayed third-round clash on Court 3.
Bjorkman is playing his 14th consecutive Wimbledon and last year's semi-final effort was his best. The former world number four will be eager to atone for his shock first-round exit in the doubles where he and Max Mirnyi were second seeds. Bjorkman had not lost a first-round doubles at Wimbledon since his first appearance in 1993.
Arthurs, ranked 135 to Bjorkman's 35, had only played the Australian Open on the tour this year and reached the third round. This is his eighth Wimbledon and he is looking to reach the last 16 for the third time.
Arthurs and Bjorkman have met six times (2000-2004) and the Swede leads 4-2, including a win apiece on grass. Bjorkman is the 1.39 favourite with Betfair to go through while Arthurs, a 6ft 3in left-hander, is on offer at 3.45 to keep his grand finale going. The winner is likely to meet seventh seed Tomas Berdych next.
Daniela Hantuchova (Slovakia, 10) v Serena Williams (USA, 7)
The pick of the women's singles matches today is the fourth-round clash on Centre Court between 10th seed Daniela Hantuchova and seventh seed Serena Williams.
A Williams win is likely to produce the quarter-final everyone wants to see - a clash between two-time champion Williams and two-time runner-up Justine Henin, the top seed.
Hantuchova, who reached this stage last year, has met the American six times, the first in the 2002 Wimbledon quarter-finals when Williams went on to win the title for the first time.
Williams leads 5-1 in head to heads with Hantuchova's only win coming in the last 32 at the 2006 Australian Open. Williams (second favourite at 5 to lift the trophy) is strongly fancied at 1.14 with Betfair to go through, while Hantuchova can be supported at 8 to cause an upset.
