Betfair's top dog sniffs around the truth behind the latest tabloid tales.
• Cruft's champion - Top stories that can dominate the news agenda
• Pedigree chum - Insights that tell you something you don't know
• Dog's dinner - Speculation, guesswork, or ideas that just don't come off.
Top Dog says:
As head of UEFA Michel Platini seems to have learned what FIFA President Sepp Blatter has known for years: if you want to get your name in the papers start talking about what's wrong with English football. Platini says the game in this country has lost it's soul by importing too many foreign players. But much like Blatter he doesn't tell us how to solve the problems. Talk of a quota is fine, but it's against the European employment laws. That's why it was dropped in the first place.
Cruft's:
Daily Express - FA cannot shake off angry Ken - Football politics expert Harry Harris reveals Ken Bates is still trying to get Leeds' 15 points back and is using the "root and branch" study at the FA to make his case again. If he gets his way Leeds would be 10 points clear and unbeatable value at [2.76]
Pedigree Chum:
Daily Mail - A laughing stock - Tony Adams always talks sense and his views on the England job make worrying reading. He says English coaches are treated as a joke throughout the rest of Europe. "Tactically and technically they don't think we are very clued up".
The Sun -- You've done nothing yet - United are already safely through to the next stage of the Champions League so Sir Alex is looking for other ways to fire up his side against Sporting Lisbon tonight. He says they are still a long way short of the 1999 legends. United will field a virtual reserve side, but are still as short as [1.64]
Daily Express - Allardyce on collision course - North East man Niall Hickman nails a growing rift at The Toon. Sam Allardyce wants more cash in the transfer window, chairman Chris Mort says there won't be major funds available. Newcastle are [4.6] to get the three points Big Sam needs to turn things round at Blackburn on Saturday.
Daily Star - Ice-borg hots up problem for Grant - Advance warning for Chelsea that their Champions League game in Norway tomorrow will be played in minus ten degrees of frost and snow. Chelsea lost 3-2 in Tromso in a blizzard a decade ago. Rosenborg are a very hot [7] to spring a shock
Daily Mirror - Nolan plea: We mustn't sell Anelka - Kevin Nolan spells out the blindingly obvious. If Nicolas Anelka goes to Manchester United in the January window there's nobody left to score goals for them. Nolan's views will count for nothing if Fergie finds the money. Bolton are [5.3] to go down.
Dog' s dinner:
Daily Express - Derby look to Jewell - The Express, and it's sister paper the Daily Star, look out of step with their claim that Paul Jewell is top of Derby's wanted list. Jewell turned down Wigan because he didn't want another relegation fight. Why would he join the bottom club at Pride Park? You can lay him at [5.5].
