Border Reiver talks us through the best bets north of the border

Berwick's appalling form continued last week with a dismal 2-1 Scottish Cup defeat at Dumbarton. The Sons are having a worse season than us, so everyone travelled with a fair bit of optimism. That lasted all of 5 minutes. Playing into a force 9 gale, a long ball found McFarlane and he finished well. Berwick then took a grip of the game but couldn't make possession tell and after 36 minutes were dealt a killer blow with a second goal for the Sons. The second half started well and the award of a penalty gave everyone hope of a fightback but alas it was saved and even with the benefit of the gale we were never a threat to Dumbarton's goal.

A totally unacceptable performance and some of the players really do look like they couldn't care less. Had we qualified for the next round, an away day at Premier league St Mirren would certainly have swelled the coffers. Now it looks like our January transfers will be of the bargain basement variety. An awful day was compounded when I checked my ''bets'' for the day and all 3 went down comprehensively.

This week we travel to Brechin City for, even this early in the season, a massive 6 pointer. Lose this and we will be 6 points adrift at the foot of the table. We are already 10 points from safety so this is a huge game. The fans will be expecting to see nothing but 100% from the players and anyone who doesn't will soon be made aware of it. Our season could literally be over by December 1st, a terrible thought.

Dunfermline v Dundee.

I'm expecting Dundee to continue their recent run of form and come away with all 3 points at Dunfermline. Dundee should be fresh from their 2 week break and despite losing their last game to a late own goal they should beat the Pars this time. Dunfermline have sunk to second from bottom after being relegated from the SPL last season. They were almost everyone's favourites to bounce straight back as champions but it really couldn't have turned out any worse. The board have stuck by the manager but they can only do so for so long, and surely, anything but a win this week and his time will be up. Last sunday the Pars lost to St Johnstone in the Challenge Cup final. 3-0 down after 30 minutes they clawed it back to 3-2 at the final whistle but this typifies Dunfermline this season. They start to play like they can, but only when it looks all but over. I shall be backing Dundee around 2.3.

Arbroath v Forfar

Having spoken to some Stenhousemuir fans midweek, they have confirmed what I already new, Forfar are appalling. Stennie were made to look very good last week and Forfar will be up against a much better team this week when they travel to Arbroath. On their day, Arbroath can beat anyone in this league and they won't have to be at their best to see off a team who haven't kept a clean sheet for 5 matches and who haven't won for 9. Arbroath are around 1.5.
This weeks bets are: back Dundee around 2.3 and back Arbroath around 1.5.

Good Luck
