Gabriel Agbonlahor was tipped to start against Spain before getting injured

"Darren Bent has operated as a lone striker plenty of times at club level but whether his general play is of a high enough standard to do so for his country is arguable, especially against Spain."

First it was Phil Jagielka's toe, and now for the second time this week, an injury has compromised Fabio Capello's plans against Spain, with Gabriel Agbonlahor returning to his club...

Friday's newspapers were filled with speculation that Capello had opted to partner Darren Bent with his Aston Villa team-mate, who has outshone him so far this season, however a late injury problem has forced the 25-year-old to withdraw.

The thrice-capped forward's loss presents a huge opportunity to the other three attackers in the England squad - Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Bobby Zamora - none of whom have ever started an international before.

Though Capello is expected to name a relatively youthful squad, primarily a consequence of the decision not to start captain John Terry, the lack of experience up front might prompt a change of tact, with Bent lining up alongside two wingers.

Bent has operated as a lone striker plenty of times at club level but whether his general play is of a high enough standard to do so for his country is debatable, especially against Spain. It is therefore a tough call for the Three Lions boss, who will no doubt be criticised whichever route he goes down!

Whatever the verdict is to be, the absence of Agbonlahor represents a further blow to England's chances of ending a run of three games without a goal against the world champions. Vicente del Bosque's side are [2.48] to claim another clean sheet and [1.92] to triumph.
