Frederic Piquionne'a two goals made the difference for Portsmouth against Birmingham
"Those who matched the South Coast club at [500.00] will be celebrating with the Portsmouth fans, having see their odds come in to [13.0] after today's win."
French striker fires Pompey into semi-finals with quick brace as cash strapped club prepare for Wembley return. Meanwhile, Walcott strikes for Arsenal but United go top with hard-fought win at Wolves.
The road may not be paved with gold but crisis-club Portsmouth are going to Wembley after beating Birmingham 2-0 in their FA Cup quarter-final.
Pompey touched [3.8] at Fratton Park before striker Frederic Piquionne scrambled the ball into the visitors' net after 67 minutes. Three minutes later, Piquionne latched on to the impressive Jamie O'Hara's killer pass, bamboozled his marker and fired a right foot shot past Joe Hart and into the net.
The goal-line technology debate was re-ignited with 10 minutes remaining when Liam Ridgewell thought he'd scored. The referee judged that the Birmingham defender's close range shot had not crossed the line before David James caught it; television replays showed it had.
Birmingham were frustrated to be denied a goal which could have altered the course of the tie but neutrals with an ounce of compassion will be delighted for Portsmouth. After going into administration a fortnight ago the club have now won two games on the trot and are going to Wembley for an FA Cup semi-final. Those who matched the South Coast club at [500.00] will also be celebrating, having see their odds come in to [13.0] after today's win.
The day's other FA Cup tie ended in a 0-0 draw between Fulham and Tottenham at Craven Cottage. Despite having to go to a replay for the third successive round, Spurs are second favourites to win the cup at [4.8]
In the Premier League, Manchester United returned to the of the table with a hard-fought 0-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux. The Champions created nothing in the first half and had to wait until 18 minutes from time for Paul Scholes to tuck away the decisive goal. It was Scholes' 100th Premier League goal and exactly the type of strike that can prove vital in title races. United are now favourites to lift a fourth successive league championship - into [2.63] with Chelsea at [2.76] - after their victory. They lead the table by two points.
Arsenal are trading at [3.75] to win a first Premier League title for six years after their 3-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates put them level with Chelsea. The Gunners didn't have it all their own way and the game was locked at 1-1 until Theo Walcott score his first goal in 18 games on the hour mark. Andrei Arshavin rewarded those who backed over 3.5 goals at [21.0] in injury time.
Owen Coyle was delighted to pick up three points at Upton Park and so were backers of Bolton at [6.6]. Kevin Davies sent the away side on their way with a 10th minute goal, followed six minutes later by one from Jack Wilshire. The Hammers rallied late on after Alessando Diamante's goal but they were disappointing throughout and Bolton deserved their 1-2 win.
