League One Betting: Baptism of fire for Gary Waddock

English Football League RSS / Alan Dudman / 15 October 2009 / Leave a comment

Gary Waddock left his job at Aldershot during the week to take over at Wymcombe but a home tie against Colchester on debut is not the easiest way to get off the mark.

Aldershot's Gary Waddock has taken over the reigns from Peter Taylor at Wycombe Wanderers and visitors Colchester are unlikely to make life easy for him in his first match in charge, says Alan Dudman. Plus the best of the rest in League One this weekend.

"Boothroyd saw his side grind out another 1-0 win at Orient last Saturday, a win acheived by tons of long throws, aerial presence and focus on set-pieces. Pivotal to their side is on-loan forward Kayode Odejayi. He is strong and quick, muscular and forceful. His first touch is useless, but it matters little, he is there to do a job in a big unit. "

It didn't take long did it? Over the last seven days, Tranmere have got rid of John Barnes, whilst Peter Taylor is no longer at Wycombe. Both are very short in the relegation market - with Rovers at [2.26] not quite the good thing to go down as Wycombe, who can backed at [1.46] for the drop.

The Chairboys have appointed Gary Waddock rather swiftly to replace Taylor this week, whilst Rovers have reportedly been linked with an audacious managerial move for Robbie Fowler, who is still scoring goals over in Oz. Fowler would be a disaster, Waddock might not be...we'll see.

Wycombe Wanderers [3.95] versus Colchester United [2.10], the draw [3.50]

We will indeed Mr Waddock. A bold statement came from the lips of the former Aldershot boss at his first press conference by declaring "I like my teams to play the passing game and attack." His opposite in the dug-out this Saturday (Adie Boothroyd) is also opposite in his football philosophy. And as much as I hate route-one, long balls, long throws and an aerial bombardment - I have to say Colchester are a decent punting medium at the
moment.

Boothroyd saw his side grind out another 1-0 win at Orient last Saturday, a win acheived by tons of long throws, aerial presence and focus on set-pieces. Pivotal to their side is on-loan forward Kayode Odejayi. He is strong and quick, muscular and forceful. His first touch is useless, but it matters little, he is there to do a job in a big unit.

Colchester are value at just over evens, and should expose Wycombe's weakness in dealing with set-pieces.

Recommendations:

Back Colchester to beat Wycombe @ 2.10]
Back Colchester to win 0-1 [9.00], 0-2 [13.00]

Oldham Athletic [2.70] versus Southampton [2.86], the draw [3.40]

A really intriguing game here at Boundary Park this weekend, with Oldham gaining a reputation as something of a dull spoiling team whilst Southampton are looking the real deal under Alan Pardew these days - shame they started the season minus all those points.

The Saints easily beat Southend last week and were always in command. They are closing games out better now when taking a lead, and look to have goals right across the pitch. They've just signed former West Ham striker David Connolly - he should be in contention after his razor sharp display for the reserves in midweek.

Oldham go with a 4-5-1 usually and were labelled 'boring' at Charlton on Saturday. They like to congest the middle of the pitch, whilst Southampton go with two wide men and try to stretch.

Recommendations:

Lay Oldham @ [2.70]
Back 0-0 [12.00], Southampton to win 0-1 [12.00]

Leyton Orient [2.56] versus Brentford [3.10], the draw [3.40]

Orient couldn't quite deal with Colchester's Rugby tactics last weekend, and should
appreciate more of a game of football this Saturday at Brisbane Road. They've been ok at home bar two blips, whilst Brentford are finding goals hard to come by.

The Bees were much better defensively up at Hartlepool, they should be ok dealing with Orient in a game of few goals.

Reommendations:

Back the draw @ [3.40]
Back 0-0 [11.00], 1-1 [14.00]

Weekend bets:

Back the draw Orient v Brentford @ [3.40]
Lay Oldham @ [2.70] v Southampton
Back Colchester to beat Wycombe 1-0 @ [9.00] and 2-0 [13.00]
