"Total Goals Guys" reflect on a weekend with mixed results
On an average week we have been selecting 5 games with goals in them. If we are only looking for one goal in each of these games the odds of us having a perfect weekend come in at around 1.4, the same price of say a Liverpool/Manchester United double on Saturday. At the weekend however we were looking for 2 goals or more in four of our five selections and our chances of a clean slate were 2.37, similar to the odds of Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Rangers and Celtic all winning at the weekend, not beyond the realms of possibility but more chances of a something going wrong somewhere.
That somewhere was Old Trafford again and in hindsight we were maybe a little bit on the greedy side when asking for 2 goals in this as well as 3 other matches. There is a distinct change in attitude and tactics between a dominant home side locked at 0-0 and desperate to open the scoring between that of a side 1 nil up with 15-20 minutes to burn and that was definitely the case with United on Saturday evening. Ronaldo and Ronney are big misses for the champions and it's taking attacking newcomers Nani, Anderson and Tevez a while to settle into free flowing goal getters, hopefully it will come and quickly.
We were on two goals at Ibrox on Saturday and despite a lacklustre performance we got 4 as the Gers ran home easy winners without reply. Andy Webster headed home from a corner on the hour mark, following up Kris Boyd's' deflected first half free-kick.
It was an easy afternoon for Liverpool at Anfield as they demolished a sorry Derby side by 6 goals to nil. The job was done just before HT with Ryan Babel adding a second to a 45-yard dead ball effort from Xabi Alonso on 27 minutes.
Barcelona got back to winning ways at the Camp Nou on Sunday night where Ronaldinho brushed aside all the last minute transfer window speculation surrounding him to open the scoring against Bilbao on 8 minutes. Ronnie settled the issue where we were concerned with a 38th minute penalty, his double helping Barca to a 3-1 win.
Chelsea went dropped their first points of the season and all 3 of them at Villa Park on Sunday. With the game goalless at HT it was looking as though we were heading for a terrible finale to a disappointing weekend but Zat Knights header 2 minutes into the second period sent Villa on their way to famous win and was enough for our 1 goal wager.
Elsewhere the goals flew in for both Celtic and Real Madrid yesterday with St. Mirren taking a 5-1 battering at Love Street and Villarreal following up their opening day 3-0 win at Valencia by taking a mauling themselves going down 5-0 at home to the La Liga champs. Two games that were foreseen to be tight contests!
There were a few goals at the Emirates also where Arsenal dumped Portsmouth by 3 goals to 1 and two late goals in Hamburg seen Bayern Munich have a 77th minute Klose effort cancelled out in a 1-1 draw.
Despite the Old Trafford slip up we lost only £2.07, thanks mostly to 3 successful 2 goal bets. Again there were goals in all the matches concerning the sides we are focusing on and in the weeks ahead we aim to play it slightly safer than we did at the weekend just passed but only just as at this stage the stakes are low and so is the risk, makes this the optimum time for such bold moves as at the weekend.
We took the view at the outset that we would leave to one side so we'll take a back seat this weekend.
