The "Total Goals Guys" talk us through their weekend selections
We know we're stating the obvious here but with odds barely rising above 1.16 for "1 goal or more" in a match before kick-off its less of a gamble to lay a 0-0 draw than it is to predict an outcome in the match odds market. It's even more true when the top club's top players have been away representing their respective countries in a Euro2008 qualifying double header.
Guys like Gerrard, Malouda and Scott Brown for example will have endured a tough 10 days of intense pressure, will probably have had Thursday off before reporting back to their clubs on Friday for light training and a tactical prep talk ahead of the weekends domestic fixtures - not ideal is it! What we´re getting at is there is an air of uncertainty not too dissimilar to the aftermath of a mid week Champions League or Uefa Cup clash and match odds backers will be on their guard for the infamous "hangover" this weekend.
The luxury we are afforded this and every weekend of course is that only goals matter and not results so first name on the team sheet this weekend has to be Barcelona as they visit Osasuna on Sunday. Barca drew 0-0 in their last away game at Santander so the 1.07 against lightening striking twice looks as good a banker we´ll get this or any weekend and we´re happy to oblige.
Staying in Spain, Almeria visit Real Madrid on Saturday and we fancy the champions to carry on from their 5-goal romping of Villarreal with a comfortable win. In the home side's last 60 games at Santiago only 14 have ended in the "unders" category so when you consider the fine start the champions have endured and side that with the calibre of opponent they are lining up against then 1.23 for 2 goals or more looks a solid selection, we certainly think so anyway . . .
We are also looking for 2 goals at Parkhead on Saturday where Inverness CT are the visitors. New Caley boss Craig Brewster will be looking to steady the ship but with his side already looking like relegation candidates he will surely have bigger fish on the fixture calendar to fry we don't envisage to much of a fight from the highlanders. The hosts put 5 past St Mirren in their last outing, a side who are on a par with Inverness and this was away from home. 2 goals here is priced up at 1.16, the same as Celtic in the match odds so at least this covers a scoring draw.
We´ve recently went on record as saying we don't like derby matches for this market but we may have been a little hasty as Arsenals visit to White Hart Lane appeals this Saturday. Only 1 of the sides last 6 premiership clashes has finished with less than two goals being scored and the net often bulges in what has been a highly entertaining clash in recent times. Here we have no qualms in backing a goal at 1.08.
Our final selection of the weekend is 1 goal or more in the Saturday lunch time SPL clash at Tynecastle between Hearts and Rangers. The Jambos are enduring a tough time of late and will see a win over Rangers as the perfect springboard to what has been a hugely disappointing start to their season. The Gers meanwhile have a 100% run on the go and when you consider Hearts early season form you would fancy a piece of 1.8 on Rangers coming away with 3 points. The home side will have a go here though so the 1.08 that is on offer for 1 goal or more looks a good back.
Elsewhere Liverpool visit Pompey, Chelsea host Blackburn, Man Utd are away to Everton and Bayern Munich will look to get back to winning ways in their Bundesliga home clash with Schalke. You can look at stats until your broadband server packs in but if you simply don't fancy something you tend to steer clear no matter what market your operating in.
