In his last column before a one month break, Ben Davies tells us about the talents of Kasper Schmeichel and Lee Hughes and why the Notts County dressing room is the place for pranks and good comaraderie.
"Another player who has got a lot of coverage this year is our striker Lee Hughes. Hughesy is having a great season and has scored 26 goals already. Lee makes the hardest thing in football look easy - scoring goals. He is great to have in your team and I am delighted I do not have to play against him. He would score goals in any division."
As we approach the last stage of the season we are now beginning to catch up with our games in hand and the League table is now taking shape. It really is going to be a fascinating end to the season with a number of teams all vying for the automatic places and play-off spots with the fight to stay in the division looking as tight as it is at the top.
We played Bournemouth live on Sky Sports on Monday night in what turned out to be a very disappointing draw for us as we conceded in the last minute of the game. I thought we had done enough to win the game and were heading for second place in the League when they scored that late goal. We still managed to climb a place to third and we still have games in hand over our rivals but the timing of their second equalizer in the 2-2 draw was annoying.
I always enjoy playing in front of the Sky cameras as there always seems to be an extra buzz around the place. It's nice to be able to watch the game when you get home and see what the pundits have to say about the teams and the game. I just see it as a normal game and don't do anything different to any other game when the cameras are in town but I do get just that little bit more excited about it at all.
We have had a very good season so far this year but we still have a lot of hard work to do if we want to achieve promotion. We have stuck together as a team and have had some great results. We have also had some players who have had great seasons on an individual basis. Our goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichal has had a lot of coverage this year and rightly so. "Big Kas" is in a different League to any keeper I have played with, or against, in my career. He has got the lot and after training me and a couple of the lads always stay out and do some shooting sessions with him. He is virtually unbeatable.
I'm sure he will have a very good career and deserves to as he works so hard at his game. He is utterly devastated whenever he concedes a goal, even in training. That shows you how much he values keeping the ball out of his net and as people often say, the more seriously you take training the more you're likely to be successful on match day.
Another player who has got a lot of coverage this year is our striker Lee Hughes. Hughesy is having a great season and has scored 26 goals already. Lee makes the hardest thing in football look easy - scoring goals. He is great to have in your team and I am delighted I do not have to play against him. He would score goals in any division. He has the lot as a centre forward and works so hard during games; he never gives defenders so much as a moment's rest. He's having a great season and it's not hard to see why he has played at the highest level.
He is also the ultimate prankster in the dressing room. He has come up with and executed some classic tricks this season. The lads' phones are packed with video footage of Hughsey performing a number of antics.
All in all it's been a pleasure to be part of this team and you couldn't wish to share a dressing room with a better bunch of lads.
This weekend sees a great match as Manchester United take on Liverpool. This promises to be a classic as there is so much at stake for both teams. I was interested to hear that Stevie Gerrard has once again escaped punishment after committing a couple of slightly unsavoury offences. I must admit I am quite surprised that he has done so as the F.A are normally so strict when it comes to similar incidents. I am not suggesting that the F.A are protecting their country's vice-captain but they are taking a slightly lenient view of what he did. I wonder if a punishment would have been handed out if the perpetrator had been someone else, more specifically a less integral part of the England team, but I guess we'll never know. I must admit that I'm actually quite glad he won't be sitting this one out as it makes the game against United a better spectacle with the Liverpool skipper on the pitch. I am going to go for a Manchester United win at [1.74].
With so many vital matches coming up over the next few weeks I've taken the decision to have a break from writing this column so I can fully focus on my football as we attempt to secure automatic promotion. I'll get back to writing it in a few weeks' time. At worst we'll be in the play-offs by that stage but I hope that by then I will be looking forward to playing in League One next season.
