Judd Trump is ready to make his mark

"Trump has been tipped for superstardom since childhood, and on the evidence of last month's breakthrough ranking title in China, the Bristolian is ready to deliver."

A young star in the making can come of age at the Crucible, says Paul Krishnamurty as he kicks off our tournament long tipping column

The first round draw always seems to throw up at least one dream match-up, between one of the game's elite and a youngster widely tipped to join him in due course.

Precisely such a mouthwatering clash opens this year's proceedings, with reigning champion Neil Robertson up against brilliant 21-year-old qualifier Judd Trump on Saturday morning. It looks set to be one of the matches of the tournament.

Robertson is bidding to break a long-standing Crucible jinx, that has meant no player has ever successfully defended their first world title here. Even snooker's ultimate legends, Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry, failed on their first return visit as champion.

In order to negotiate just the first hurdle, he will have to get past arguably the most in-form player at Sheffield. Trump has been tipped for superstardom since childhood, and on the evidence of last month's breakthrough ranking title in China, the Bristolian is ready to deliver. In landing the China Open, Trump defeated class acts Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy in convincing fashion, scoring fluently and prolifically. He need fear nobody.

That victory lifted Trump up to tenth in the provisional rankings, only five places below his more experienced Aussie opponent, and he looks here to stay. Whether Judd is quite ready to bag a world title remains to be seen, but he is certainly a plausible contender. So, of course, is Robertson, who was outstanding both here last year and when winning the World Open. Historical trends aside, there are no weaknesses in the Aussie's claims. Given the stellar form of his opponent, however, the outsider of two must rate the value, in a match that could well go right down to the wire.

Furthermore, in addition to backing Trump, it might be worth considering the bet I've already advised on a 'First Time Champion'. If Robbo is eliminated early, the current odds of [2.2] will surely go odds-on.
