NFL Trends: Andy Dalton's broken thumb means avoid backing the Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals are 10-3 for the season but after Andy Dalton's broken thumb on Sunday, Neil Monnery will be avoiding them like the plague on the markets.

"Andrew Luck might not be back this season, Matt Hasselbeck is hurting, they let Jacksonville score 51 on them on Sunday and yet they still lead that pathetic AFC South."

New England Patriots

Well the crisis in New England didn't last long did it? Rob Gronkowski was back a lot sooner than expected, Julian Edelman is practising again and should return this week. Results at the top of the AFC last weekend have once more put the AFC road to the Super Bowl through Gillette Stadium and the Patriots are the clear 4.67/2 Super Bowl favourites. The only thing that isn't rosy for the Patriots is Tom Brady saying Donald Trump is a personal friend of his.

Pittsburgh Steelers

They beat the Bengals at the weekend which wasn't much of a surprise despite being underdogs. The offense is good, the defense is good and the division title isn't completely beyond them thanks to Andy Dalton's injury (more on that to come later). The Steelers play Denver at the weekend and are very short favourites on the Exchange while the Sportsbook has opened the spread at Pittsburgh -5.5pts. Despite all this they still need help to make the play-offs, but they are going to get there, and trust me, nobody wants to face the Steelers at the moment.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Fity-one points. Let me just type that again - 51 points. That is how many the Jags put up on Indianapolis on Sunday. The Jags' D really isn't anything to write home about, it isn't very good but they can put up points on you. Allen Robinson (12) and Allen Hurns (8) have the most TDs for a WR duo in the league and Julius Thomas has five as well. They face fading Atlanta this week. The Sportsbook has the Falcons getting 3.5, if they were getting 13.5, I'd still back the Jags on Sunday.

Cincinnati Bengals

When your starting QB breaks his thumb, it isn't a good thing, not by a long shot. When you have gone four years on the spin losing in your opening play-off game and your QB breaks his thumb in December then the sky is falling in. They will limp into the play-offs with AJ McCarron under center and that isn't a good thing. I watched him a lot in college and he is not the answer. Andy Dalton may be back in a month but for now Bengals backers will be low on confidence.

Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck might not be back this season, Matt Hasselbeck is hurting, they let Jacksonville score 51 on them on Sunday and yet they still lead that pathetic AFC South. They don't have a tough schedule the rest of the way but with their QB out seemingly for the foreseeable future, the backup hurt and a struggling defense, I wouldn't trust them one jot. Yet someone has to win the AFC South, one more win might well do it for either the Colts or the Texans. What a mad league.

Atlanta Falcons

They've lost six straight and have been poor in doing so. On Sunday they faced a very good Carolina Panthers squad but losing 38-0 is not the mark of a team that is going anywhere. I fully expect them to make it seven straight losses on Sunday. It is a shame as early in the season with Devonta Freeman and Julio Jones they looked to have one of the most dynamic RB/WR in the league. Sadly they haven't been able to keep it up.
