NFL Tipsheet: Preview and recommended bets for all Week 2 fixtures

Carson Palmer of the Arizona Cardinals
Carson Palmer of the Arizona Cardinals

The opening week nerves have gone and we quickly move onto the second round of fixtures in the NFL. Luca Bercelli provides a tipsheet for all this weekend's games...

"A solid defensive display got Arizona the win, so if QB Carson Palmer and co can up their game slightly, they should make mincemeat of a Giants group which seems to be in disarray."

Recommended Bet
Back the Arizona Cardinals to win @ 1.784/5

Atlanta Falcons @ Cincinnati Bengals
Sunday, 18:00
TV: Sky Sports 2

Two teams with impressive week one wins clash at Paul Brown Stadium. I make this one impossible to call so have to take Atlanta to cover with the 4.5 points head start.

Recommended Bet
Back the Atlanta Falcons +4.5 @ 2.111/10 to win

Arizona Cardinals @ New York Giants
Sunday, 18:00

Arizona scraped home against San Diego last week due to some costly turnovers but I still make them my dark horses of the league. A solid defensive display got them the win, so if QB Carson Palmer and co can up their game slightly, they should make mincemeat of a Giants group which seems to be in disarray.

Recommended Bet
Back the Arizona Cardinals to win @ 1.784/5
(best bet)

Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers
Monday, 01:30

The Niners are going to win this one but odds of 1.364/11 are about as sexy as Kelly Maloney in a hot tub; so in a search for some value we'll opt for San Fran -7pts on the handicap.

Recommended Bet
Back San Francisco 49ers -7pts @ 2.1211/10

Dallas Cowboys @ Tennessee Titans
Sunday, 18:00

I like this match-up for betting purposes because I think there was an overreaction to both teams' results on day one. On the one hand Dallas weren't humiliated by a superstrong 49ers, and on the other Tennessee looked good against the Chiefs, but in reality the Chiefs were pretty awful. We'll definitely get a run for our money taking Dallas with the points.

Recommended Bet
Back the Dallas Cowboys +4.0pts @ 1.910/11

Detroit Lions @ Carolina Panthers
Sunday, 18:00

Panthers' QB Cam Newton is back at the helm after missing last week's win with a rib injury. That has to be a big plus for an already talented team, and he'll want to eclipse the strong showing by deputy Derek Anderson. The Lions will rely heavily on Megatron as usual, (two touchdowns and 164 yards receiving last week), but unlike the Giants, the Panthers' D will apply some serious pressure and they should force a win.

Recommended Bet
Back the Carolina Panthers to win @ 1.768/11

Houston Texans @ Oakland Raiders
Sunday, 21:25

Houston's monster defensive end JJ Watt was on the rampage last week versus the Redskins, repaying a small portion of his newly signed $100m contract. Oakland's rookie QB Derek Carr is next in line for grappling practice and he'd be wise to pack some extra underpants. It could get scary for the kid and it would be a major shock if he pulls off a win.

Recommended Bet
Back the Houston Texans to win @ 1.75/7

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Washington Redskins
Sunday, 18:00

This match has got a Scottish Independence kind of feel about it; I've got no idea of the result...and I don't care anyway! So with the result a mystery, and a tempting points line on offer, let's sit back and cheer on the scoreboard. The Jags surprised just about everyone with signs of life last week and the 'Skins simply have to get better offensively.

Recommended Bet
Back Over 43.5pts @ 2.01/1

Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos
Sunday, 21:25
TV: Sky Sports 2

Facing Peyton Manning and Denver's fierce home advantage is a dismal prospect at the best of times. The fact that the Chiefs are coming off a week one dud and have several key injuries, transforms their already uphill task at Mile High into an Alpe D'huez job. Not a betting proposition for me, but if you have to, get on Denver on the first half handicap.

Recommended Bet
Back the Denver Broncos on First Half Points Spread -6.5pts @ 1.84/5

Miami Dolphins @ Buffalo Bills
Sunday, 18:00

Both teams caused upsets in week one and have momentum, but in a tight contest I just side with home advantage and the Bills. Having deflected some of the huge pressure that was building after a disappointing pre-season, Bills QB EJ Manuel should be able to perform with more confidence and freedom going forward.

Recommended Bet
Back the Buffalo Bills @ 1.9520/21

New England Patriots @ Minnesota Vikings
Sunday, 18:00

The Vikings' game plan goes out of the window with the news that Adrian Peterson will miss this weekend's clash. The Pats are masters at targeting opponents' weaknesses and with a gaping chasm at running back, the Vikes' should pay heavily. Tom Brady should boss this one.

Recommended Bet
Back the New England Patriots -3.0pts @ 1.84/5

New Orleans Saints @ Cleveland Browns
Sunday, 18:00

These two scored 61 points between them last week and both defences struggled. Do you see where this is going? Yes, it's going all the way to a large click in the blue column labelled 'Over 47.5 points'. Money for old rope, and by the way; FYI Jimmy Graham will score a couple of touchdowns.

Recommended Bet
Back Over 47.5pts @ 1.9520/21

New York Jets @ Green Bay Packers
Sunday, 21:25

Gang Green's defence (that's the Jets, not the Pack) will have its work cut out containing Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field, but, after their strong showing in week one, I think they'll do a better job than handicappers anticipate. Add steadily improving QB Geno Smith into the mix and a 9.5 point head start looks very tempting.

Recommended Bet
Back the New York Jets +9.5pts @ 1.84/5

Seattle Seahawks @ San Diego Chargers
Sunday, 21:05

The Hawks are so full of confidence right now that it seems crazy to oppose them, but oppose them I will. They're not so daunting away from home and, with punchy opponents in the form of the Chargers unlikely to be intimidated, the handicap is well worth a punt.

Recommended Bet
Back the San Diego Chargers +6.0pts @ 1.910/11

Saint Louis Rams @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sunday, 21:05

We're only in week two and yet this game already has an 'also ran' feel to it. These two sorry outfits managed a grand total of zero points in their respective first halves last week. The Rams are a mess at quarterback and Tampa are struggling with a new system. It all points to a low-scoring narrow Tampa win so we'll be crafty and take the Rams with the points.

Recommended Bet
Back the St Louis Rams +5.5pts @ 2.01/1

Philadelphia Eagles @ Indianapolis Colts
Tuesday, 01:30
TV: Eurosport

You just have to be impressed with Colts' quarterback Andrew Luck. He almost conjured up a miracle comeback against a strong Broncos side last week, and in a shootout I take him to outshine another young QB in Nick Foles.

Recommended Bet
Back the Indianapolis Colts @ 1.645/8
