NFL Tipsheet: Mini previews and recommended bets for all Week 16 fixtures

The Vikings take on the Dolphins on Sunday night
The Vikings take on the Dolphins on Sunday night

The NFL fixture list is a minefield, but we're pushing Luca Bercelli into it once again. Can he dodge the bombs?

"The Bills are a strong, strong team and one that pounded Green Bay into submission last week. I'm confident they'll smash the Raiders and 5.5pts on the spread is the early Christmas present I've been waiting for."

Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington Redskins
Saturday 21.30

It's taken a while but Eagles' fans have finally realised that they have a great defense, an above average offense, a great coach...and a big fat Christmas turkey calling the shots under centre. Yes the Sanchize has reverted to type, and is now doing what he does best; singlehandedly turning winning situations into head-scratching losses. This match-up versus the Skins should be a formality and one the Eagles should win by 12 points. With the Sanchize at the helm, and RG III likely to spark into life at some point, I'll take Washington +7.5 (to teeny stakes!).

Recommended Bet
Back the Washington Redskins +7.5pts @ 2.01/1

San Diego Chargers @ San Francisco 49ers
Sunday 01:25

The Niners played tough in a close one against the Seahawks last week, but they still got beat and the situation off the field gets messier and messier. I was impressed enough, however, to keep them on my side even though they've got nothing to play for. Should be close but I'll take CK Maxx for the outright.

Recommended Bet
Back the San Francisco 49ers to win @ 1.9310/11

Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints
Sunday 18:00

The Saints really got their mojo back last week crushing the Bears 31-15, and it's high time they strung some consistency together if they want to do anything late doors. Now that the winning post-(season) is in sight there's no way they're going to let it slip so I'll take them to win all day long.

Recommended Bet
Back the New Orleans Saints to win @ 1.4840/85

Baltimore Ravens @ Houston Texans
Sunday 18:00

The Texans are down to their fourth quarterback after losing three in as many weeks. If another one goes down what price J.J. Watt taking the snaps? But, craziness aside, that's a huge negative for any organisation, and one that will be nigh on impossible to overcome. Add in the fact that Houston's main weapon, running back Arian Foster, will be up against a brick wall in the number three rush-defense, and you have little to no offense. The Ravens should cruise this.

Recommended Bet
Back the Baltimore Ravens to win @ 1.528/15

Cleveland Browns @ Carolina Panthers
Sunday 18:00

Johnny Football got much more stick than I thought he deserved after last week's hammering by the Bengals. How about that offensive line giving him some help, and how about his receivers not dropping regulation catches for fun? It was the kid's first NFL start for Peyton's sake. He's not going to be P.Manning on day one so lay off. I think he'll rebound and put up a fight v the Panthers.

Recommended Bet
Back the Cleveland Browns +3.5pts @ 1.9620/21

Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears
Sunday 18:00

This could herald a new chapter in the history of 'Sports' Booing'. Poor old J.C. is annoying the hell out of just about everybody at the moment and the funk coming out of Chi-town is palpable even from here. If da Bears get off to a slow start there might well be a riot. Whatever happens, this is a definite no-bet. J.C. on the bench can only help Chicago but they're pretty much in tatters.

Recommended Bet
Back Detroit Lions to win @ 1.330/100

Green Bay Packers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sunday 18:00

I'm guessing Aaron Rodgers is embarrassed and angry after the worst game of his career. Who does he get to take his frustration out on...the poor old Succaneers. This is an absolute gimme on the handicap, Tampa won't have answers for Rodgers, Nelson, Cobb and Lacy...and that's just the offense. Get stuck in.

Recommended Bet
Back the Green Bay Packers -10pts @ 2.186/5

Kansas City Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Sunday 18:00

Both of these outfits are right in the play off mix but I'm put off the Chiefs by their late season dip. They've only managed to beat Oakland (narrowly) in their last four games and with a tight-end their leading receiver (Travis Kelce), have become a very one-dimensional rushing attack. Pittsburgh are much more balanced and should nick the win.

Recommended Bet
Back the Pittsburgh Steelers to win @ 1.75/7

Minnesota Vikings @ Miami Dolphins
Sunday 18:00

The Vikes are now officially my second favourite team in the NFL. Firstly because they've got a sneaky star of the future quarterback, and secondly because they are always a value bet on the handicap. In the second half of the season no one has rolled them over, not even Green Bay (three points) or Detroit (two points). I'm a big fan of their defense and with the fizz going out of Miami's season I can see them annoying Tannehill all afternoon.

Recommended Bet
Back the Minnesota Vikings +7pts @ 1.9420/21

New England Patriots @ New York Jets
Sunday 18:00

The Pats might play this in second gear so it's one to be wary of, but they are so far ahead of the Jets in every department that even in reverse they'd have a chance. You've got to hand it to Jets head coach Rex Ryan though - his players love him and they'll keep busting a gut all the way to his leaving party. I've never seen an NFL game I'd like to bet on less. Just remind yourself of the score in Foxboro (27-25)! In a best of three, the coin came up heads...take the Jets +10.5pts.

Recommended Bet
Back the New York Jets +10.5pts @ 1.9520/21

New York Giants @ St Louis Rams
Sunday 21:05

The kid's a monster, and by the kid I'm talking about Odell Beckham Jr. He had a field day last week against the Redskins with three touchdowns and 143 yards, but can he do it against the best? Of course he can, even against a team that's only allowed zero touchdowns in its last three games. Problem is he's pretty much a one man team, and that's not going to stack up against a much improved St Louis. The Rams are giving up five points. It should be more.

Recommended Bet
Back the St Louis Rams -5pts @ 2.01/1

Buffalo Bills @ Oakland Raiders
Sunday 21:25

The Bills are a strong, strong team and one that pounded Green Bay into submission last week. I'm confident they'll smash the Raiders and 5.5pts on the spread is the early Christmas present I've been waiting for. Okay, so they haven't got much in the way of offense, but I doubt they'll need any with such a dominant D. There's also a chance that running back C.J. Spiller will get back into the action after injury, and if he does that's a big upgrade. Staking plans are for wimps...chuck it out the window and GO LARGE.

Recommended Bet
Back the Buffalo Bills -5.5pts @ 1.855/6
Best Bet

Indianapolis Colts @ Dallas Cowboys
Sunday 21:25

This is intriguing. Firstly let's get one thing straight. Dallas' league-leading running back DeMarco Murray will not be a big factor in this game. He broke his hand last week and looked a shadow of his previous self for most of that game, if he plays on Sunday he'll be worse. Joseph Randle is a capable back-up so that doesn't bother me: what does is the banged-up O-line. That's a huge imponderable but so is the rumour that the Colts will rest players now that they've clinched the division. Steer clear.

Recommended bet
Back the Dallas Cowboys to win @ 1.75/7

Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals
Monday 01:30

I'd like to get a bet on 0-0 for this one, no honestly I would. It's a stonking match-up, one for the purist and the only possible play is to get stuck in to the unders. Even with third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley calling the shots the Cards aren't out of this, but you'd be a pretty brave gringo to actually back them. No, this is a case of feet up and time to boo every offensive completion, and cheer every yellow flag. Oh, and look out for the clown in the stands with the big D in one hand and the cut-out fence in the other.

Recommended bet
Back under 37pts @ 2.01/1

Denver Broncos @ Cincinnati Bengals
Tuesday 01:30

So the Broncos are now the ground-and-pound masters. That's bad new for the Bengals who are 24th against the run. Yes they're on a mini-roll having won six of their last eight, but they've had a powder-puff schedule and their 9-4-1 record is a misleading one. I'll be amazed if Denver don't win this at a canter.

Recommended Bet
Back the Denver Broncos to win @ 1.684/6
