Match odds: Oakland [6.4] Green Bay Packers [1.17]
Plenty of fans and analysts are discussing whether the Packers can go 16-0, but the champs don't want to talk about that now. Instead, they prefer to tick off the targets that will see them reach that goal week-by-week. The NFC North title is already secure and the next objective is to assure themselves of a first round bye in the playoffs with a win over the Raiders at Lambeau Field.
The Packers suffered a scare last Sunday, needing a last second field-goal to secure a 38-35 victory over the Giants - their 18th consecutive win. If they can lock down that first-round bye and then secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, then and only then will they be ready to talk about the perfect season.
The portents for victory over the Raiders are excellent with the Packers aiming for their sixth straight win, having not lost to the silver and black since 1987. To reverse that trend on Sunday, Oakland will have to stop Green Bay's rampant offence which is led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. His season gets more remarkable by the game and he's already thrown 37 touchdown passes with just five interceptions. With Rodgers leading the way, the Packers are averaging a league-best 35.0 points and are 42 shy of breaking the single-season franchise record of 461 in 2009. That doesn't bode well for Oakland, who are 27th in scoring defence, allowing 25.7 points per game. The Raiders had trouble coping with the Miami offence in their last outing, eventually suffering a 34-14 defeat after being 34-0 down entering the fourth quarter.
Raiders punter Shame Lechler who is one of the best in the league was well employed in that Miami defeat as they were forced to punt on eight of their first nine possessions and they will want to keep the Packers off the field on Sunday, although Lechler has the leg strength and tactical acumen to pin the Packers deep on occasions. Even more important is the need for Oakland to cut down on the amount of penalties they are committing - ten for a total of 91 yards was the count against Miami and handing the Super Bowl holders that many yards is tantamount to suicide.
The Raiders are also still suffering with plenty of injuries. The most notable is their premier running back Darren McFadden who looks likely to miss his sixth straight game with a foot problem. We all know that the Packers have been vulnerable on defence but they have been very successful in creating turnovers and scoring off them. Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer is lacking targets and will have to be particularly careful in threading his way through the Packers coverage.
With the Raiders coming off a confidence sapping loss, riddled with injuries and coming to the Lambeau Field stronghold - the Packers have won ten straight there - they look like fighting a losing battle. The Packers can tick off another objective on their "wish-list" to go 13-0 on the season. After this they still have two home games from their remaining fixtures.
Back Green Bay Packers -10.5 @ [1.98] or better
