The college football playoff is finally here and the first cab off the rank is Oregon v Florida State. Neil Monnery previews the Rose Bowl match-up...

Oregon Ducks (2) v Florida State Seminoles (3)
Thursday 1 January 2015 - 10:00PM
We finally have a playoff in college football, rejoice!
The first match of this four team playoff sees the winner of the Pac-12 Oregon, take on the undefeated ACC champion and defending national champion Florida State.
The Seminoles are the only team yet to taste defeat this season and are still only seeded third going in, this is due to a weak schedule and several close matches. They should have lost against Notre Dame midway through the season but then came their last four games against Miami, Boston College, Florida and Georgia Tech and how they got through those games unscathed, I'm not sure any of us know.
Here is what we know about the 2014 Florida State Seminoles, they aren't a very good football team yet they know how to win when the chips are down late in the fourth quarter. This makes for a dangerous outlook when betting against them.
Led by the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, they haven't tasted defeat in over two years. The presumed second highest quarterback pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has had a down year compared to 2013 but has gotten the job done. Off the field incidents haven't helped but this man is undefeated, that stat alone is enough to look at the exchange and want to back him to once more lead his team to glory.
The only thing standing in his way are a legitimately good Oregon Ducks team. I tipped Oregon at 7.87/1 right here on betting.betfair to win it all before the season and what I said then still stands up today.
I said they could afford to lose once (they did - at Arizona) and still be in the mix. Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy this year. He threw for 3,783 yards and 38 touchdowns with only two picks. He's the guy that NFL scouts will be watching closely and with Tennessee having the overall #1 pick and a need for a QB, expect Mariota to be the first name called when the time comes.
After that loss to Arizona they won out and the closest margin of victory was 12 points, and if you take that game out of the mix then they blew everyone else away. They faced a rematch with Arizona for the Pac-12 title on a neutral field and the final score, 51-13. Oregon are a terrific football team and they are flat out better than Florida State.
Florida State are trading at 3.39/4 on the exchange and I can see why people would take the plunge as you never know what will happen, but the truth is Oregon are better and they are taking dead aim at playing once more this season, in Arlington for the National Championship game.
Back Oregon to win at 1.351/3
