The biggest game in College Football is a battle of a team of destiny and the best team in the NCAA, Neil Monnery investigates who will come out on top...
"Florida State are the big favourites in this game however, and make no bones about it, they are the better team both on paper and in real life."
Florida State v Auburn
Tuesday January 7, 01:30
The last game in the history of the Bowl Championship Series takes place at the Rose Bowl in the early hours of Tuesday morning UK time. Most college football fans will not be sad to see it depart, it will be replaced by a four-team play-off next season. The final game sees the champions of the ACC face the SEC champions.
ACC winners Florida State are the only undefeated team left after the regular season. They steamrolled their way to the number one ranking, with the smallest margin of victory being 14 points. They played four ranked teams and the aggregate score in those matches was 200-31. Pretty darn comprehensive.
Florida State will also have the Heisman Trophy winner under center. Jameis Winston has been a phenomenon this season. The Freshman QB has taken the league by storm, throwing for 3,820 yards and 38 TDs in just 13 games.
They'll take on the Auburn Tigers, winners of the SEC, who you might think were destined to win the BCS, having won two games on bizarre touchdowns in the final minute of those games.
Against Georgia on a 4th and 18, Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall just launched the ball as far as he could down-field. Three Georgia players had a shot at the ball, but they could only parry it into the air and running clean behind them was wide receiver Ricardo Louis, who strode home to win the game.
Then in the Iron Bowl, an even more improbable victory. With the scores tied at 28, Alabama head coach Nick Saban decided to attempt a 57 yard Field Goal as time expired, which was well beyond the capabilities of his young backup kicker. The Field Goal dropped short and Chris Davis ran the ball out of the End Zone and all the way down the field to score the game winning touchdown.
Auburn have been beaten once this season, losing 35-21 to LSU in Death Valley early in the season. However, on their side, is the fact the SEC has won seven straight BCS Championship games.
Florida State are the big favourites in this game however, and make no bones about it, they are the better team both on paper and in real life. Auburn got here thanks to two miracle last-gasp wins and Ohio State's capitulation against Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game.
I have always been wary against picking a team who have that 'destiny' feel around them, Auburn have that in bundles. Throw in the fact that the other four BCS Bowls, the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange have all seen the upset pick prevail, you'd think that I would be leaning Auburn and a fifth and final upset of the BCS era.
You'd be wrong. Florida Stare are just that much better than Auburn, even with the destiny feel, the run of upsets this year and the SEC's seven-year run as providing the winners of the national title. When the difference in quality is so vast and the game is on neutral ground then pick the better team.
