Attack-minded

"Garcia-Lopez has recently become more attack-minded, his movement around the court has become quicker and he fears the higher ranked players less. I believe that Garcia-Lopez will go on the offensive from the start. He may just upset the odds and make it through to the third round."

The hard courts of Flusing Meadows will sizzle with Spanish intensity today as a player on the up meets a player on the way down. Meanwhile, in the womens' draw, a feisty outsider can battle through a three-setter...

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) v Tommy Robredo (ESP)

These two Spaniards meet today in a match of contrasting styles and careers. Tommy Robredo has had an illustrious career, consistently ranked inside the top 30 for the last eight years and winning nine ATP tour titles, two of which were claimed this year at Buenos Aires and Costa Do Sauipe. But Robredo has never been past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, his defensive all-round game has not been penetrating enough to upset the elite player and his recent form suggests he may struggle against another promising Spaniard today.

Garcia-Lopez captured his maiden ATP Tour Title on clay at Kitzbuhel in May. Only last month the Spaniard recorded his best career win on the American hard-courts, defeating fellow Fernando Verdasco in straight sets 7-6 7-6. It has been noticeable that Garcia-Lopez has recently become more attack-minded, his movement around the court has become quicker and he fears the higher ranked players less. I believe that Garcia-Lopez will go on the offensive from the start and if he plays anything like the way he did against Fernando Verdasco, he may just upset the odds and make it through to the third round. Value is definitely with Garcia-Lopez

Selection: Back Garcia Lopez @ [3.2]
Lay three sets @ [2.5]

Shahar Peer (ISR) v Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP)

I believe this match is evenly matched so the value has to be with Suarez Navarro. Although known as a clay court specialist she has been able to mix it up on the hard and grass courts this year. She performs better when it comes to Grand Slams; surprisingly she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year, defeating Venus Williams en route losing to Elena Dementieva. She managed to reach the third round of the French Open and Wimbledon losing to top seeded players Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams respectively. Shahar Peer is playing some decent tennis at the moment and enjoys playing at the US Open; however I just feel that Suarez Navarro will use her battling tendencies to dig out a win, possible three setter.

Selection: Back Carla Suarez Navarro @ 3.0 to win match
