The first round of the US Open 2016 has thrown up some intriguing clashes as SportNeverSleeps take a look at some possible upsets...
"Stosur has fallen to some losses that you wouldn’t necessarily expect her to in that same timeframe, and although she’s rightly the favourite in this one, Giorgi is capable of producing a surprise as she looks to follow in the footsteps of Vinci and Flavia Pennetta in New York this year."
The draw really hasn't been kind to a number of top seeds this year, as there are potential upsets across the board.
Arguably the most unfortunate out of them all is world number one Serena Williams, who faces 2014 semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova.
The Russian is available at 5.85/1, and for some that will be tempting enough to back her. From Serena's lack of form heading into this one coupled with a shoulder injury, if Makarova can recapture the magic of two years ago, who knows what could happen.
Personally, we can't see the top seed losing in the first round but it's a bitterly tough first outing as our search for upsets takes us elsewhere with Camila Giorgi's clash with Sam Stosur first up.
The Italian is lacking consistency this summer, but what she does have in her locker is an ability to pull out an impressive win.
That's already been seen in Washington against Eugenie Bouchard and in Montreal against Sloane Stephens, while she pushed compatriot Roberta Vinci hard at the latter tournament too before eventually falling to defeat.
Further, Stosur has fallen to some losses that you wouldn't necessarily expect her to in that same timeframe, and although she's rightly the favourite in this one, Giorgi is capable of producing a surprise as she looks to follow in the footsteps of Vinci and Flavia Pennetta in New York this year.
Elsewhere, Petra Kvitova has also been handed a tough draw as she takes on Jelena Ostapenko. The Czech ace is in good form heading to the Big Apple, as seen in her run at the Olympics and at New Haven.
However, she faces a rising star on the WTA tour with the 19-year-old Latvian already ranked number 39 in the world. In addition, she's beaten Kvitova in both their previous meetings, both coming this year and with one on this surface.
In turn, she'll be hopeful that she can continue to have the drop on her more experienced rival, and at 3.9, she's certainly worth some consideration.
Meanwhile, our third tip for an upset comes courtesy of Ana Ivanovic's encounter with Denisa Allertova.
We're big fans of the Serbian star, but she has a habit of letting us down in matches that we expect her to win. On paper, this again is a match that she should win, but she prepares for this one with a 15-15 record so far this year and with no real momentum with a lack of form and playing time.
As a result, we're backing her Czech opponent to get the better of her and pile further misery on the former world number one.
Back Giorgi to beat Stosur @ 2.466/4
Back Ostapenko to beat Kvitova @ 3.9
Back Allertova to beat Ivanovic @ 3.211/5
