The 2016 US Open gets underway on Monday as SportNeverSleeps preview the action from the first day and pick out their value bets...
"She certainly could have had an easier first-round draw, as although Riske isn’t expected to make a deep run, she’s a tenacious player and can cause her problems."
It's unsurprisingly a busy day in New York on Monday, with a whole host of hopefuls getting their tournament underway with a view of making a deep run at Flushing Meadows.
Title contender Angelique Kerber is in action as she starts her bid to become world number one, while the likes of Roberta Vinci and Dominika Cibulkova take to the courts for what should be a fascinating first day's play.
Keys to pass tough test provided by Riske
Our first tip comes courtesy of the all-American encounter between Madison Keys and Alison Riske.
The former has been in great form this year and has deservedly broken into the top 10. She'll have to regroup and bounce back stronger after the Olympics though, having fallen to defeat in the semi-finals and third-place match to leave without a medal.
She certainly could have had an easier first-round draw, as although Riske isn't expected to make a deep run, she's a tenacious player and can cause her problems.
We don't expect her to produce an upset in this one, but the total games market is one to look out for as the pair have needed three sets to separate them in three of their five previous meetings.
Muguruza to advance in style against Mertens
Elsewhere, Muguruza will be hoping to avoid any drama in her first-round outing which pits her against Elise Mertens, with the Belgian ranked world number 137.
Her preparation for this one has seen her mainly feature on the ITF tour, and so this is a major step up for her.
Muguruza hasn't been in great form since her triumph at the French Open and there's every chance that Mertens could spring a surprise and really trouble her.
However, if the third seed has ambitions of winning this tournament, she needs a fast start and to produce a professional and polished performance. That's what we believe will happen and so back the Spaniard to prevail with minimal fuss.
Puig to build on Olympic momentum
After making history in Rio, Monica Puig will hope to keep the good times rolling in the Big Apple, but she faces a tough first-round match with Saisai Zheng.
The duo are the same age, same height and have a very similar career win/loss overall record, and although they've never faced off before, this could be a tight one.
Zheng boasts recent wins over the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska and Sabine Lisicki, and so she should believe she can dump the Olympic champion out.
However, we don't see that happening as Puig will look to make sure that her triumph in Rio is just the start of a strong finish to the year.
