Marin Cilic is next up for Andy Murray
"Murray, second favourite for the US Open at [4.7], blasted his way to victory in an hour-and-a-half, posting one of the most impressive performances so far from any member of the world’s top six."
Brit drops just seven games against Taylor Dent to advance into last 16 at Flushing Meadows
The matches that you can be sure Andy Murray will win before he even steps on court are now over at this year's US Open; however, the good news is it looks like the Brit is starting to peak at just the right time. After dropping a set in his second round match with Paul Capdeville, Murray dropped just seven games in total in disposing of the crowd favourite, comeback kid Taylor Dent.
Murray, second favourite for the US Open at [4.7], blasted his way to victory in an hour-and-a-half, posting one of the most impressive performances so far from any member of the world's top six. That it came against a throwback to the serve-volley days of old is irrelevant, Murray was rock solid in most areas, particularly on return of serve. That aspect of his game will be crucial in his next match, against another player capable of sending down thunderbolts, Marin Cilic. The one area that Murray will definitely be looking to improve is his first serve percentage, which registered at less than 50% against Dent.
Murray leads his head-to-heads with Cilic by three matches to zero, but each of their meetings has been tight. Murray is rightly favourite to progress as Cilic hasn't yet found the way to marry his potential with on court performances. If Murray can up his first serve percentage so Cilic can't attack his still vulnerable second serve, a last eight meeting with Juan Martin Del Potro beckons, and that is a match that could ultimately define his career.
