Serena Williams denies threatening to kill a line-judge as she crashes out at Flushing Meadow
"After the point deduction was awarded, Williams was heard to say: 'I didn't say I would kill you, are you serious?'"
Belgian's fairy-tale comeback continues after Serena crashes out with point deduction...
Tournament favourite Serena Wililams is out of the US Open after one of the most dramatic nights in Flushing Meadows history.
The American, who erupted at a line-judge for a dubious foot-fault call on match point, was beaten 6-4 7-5 by Kim Clijsters.
Clijsters has now beaten both Williams' sisters at this year's US Open and is the [1.28] favourite to win her final against Caroline Wozniacki [4.5] tonight.
Wozniacki beat Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-3 6-3.
Williams was defending two match points when the line-judge made the call against her. She then walked over to the official, gesturing angrily and shouting abuse. The line-judge reported the incident to the umpire and Williams, who had earlier received a code violation, was given a point deduction which handed victory to Clijsters.
In the ensuing controversy, Williams, who towered over the line-judge, denied making threats and was heard saying: "I didn't say I would kill you, are you serious?"
The dramatic end to the match should not detract from a superb performance from Kim Clijsters. She has played scintillating tennis over the last fortnight and was in indomitable mood throughout her straight sets victory against Williams. She is a worthy favourite to land the title which she won in 2005.
