Roger Federer has ruled himself out of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle because of his French Open exertions.

The Swiss star went down 6-3 4-6 6-3 6-4 in four marathon sets to defending champion and clay-court king, Rafael Nadal, in Sunday's final in Paris.

Federer traditionally warms up for Wimbledon in Halle, Germany, and has won the competition four times. He was scheduled to open the defence of his title in the 15th year of the tournament against fast-footed Belgian, Oliver Rochus.

In a statement posted on his official website, world number one Federer said: "In an attempt to prevent injury after the long final in Paris, I cannot defend my title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

"Gerry and Ralf Weber have always been so hospitable over the years and I love playing there.
"I look forward to returning in 2008."

Federer will put his feet up before attempting to win Wimbledon for the fifth year in succession for the first time since Swedish legend Bjorn Borg.
Federer is the predictable 1.49 leader in Betfair's developing "Men's Championships - Winner with Federer" market.
Nadal, who Federer beat in last year's Wimbledon final, is next best at 7.2, while twice-beaten finalist, Andy Roddick, is available to back at 16.
