“A small-stakes nibble on Giggs has developed into a full-blown gobble of a gamble, and in total over £9,000 has been bet on the United player at all rates down from [1000.00] to his current price of [5.8]."
Jenson Button is hot favourite to win the BBC award but punters with big bets on Manchester United star could still be celebrating, come December 13.
Ryan Giggs is overtaking his rivals in Betfair's Sports Personality of the Year Market in the same fashion as he used to fly past defenders for Manchester United.
The PFA Player Of The Year has been matched in to [5.8] at massive three-figure prices, with one punter getting 50p on at maximum odds of [1000.00]. Other similar bets have been struck at [300.00] + on the exchange.
But the Betfair punter who has had £25 on Giggs at [250.00] hasn't got too shoddy a bet, either.
Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: "A small-stakes nibble on Giggs has developed into a full-blown gobble of a gamble today, and in total over £9,000 has been bet on the United player at all rates down from [1000.00] to his current price of [5.8] on Betfair. One senses the punt has further momentum in it, too.
Jenson Button remains favourite in Betfair's BBC Sports Personality of the Year market at [1.85] - even though he hasn't won a race since June - but, as was the case in the Formula One Drivers' Championship, his lead is being eaten away by the chasing pack.
After Giggs, Heptathlon World Champion Jessica Ennis [6.8] is the market's third favourite at [6.8]. Unlike F1, which has not provided a winner since 1996, womens' athletics has a good recent record of SPOTY winners. Paul Radcliffe was triumphant in 2002 and Kelly Holmes took the prize two years later, so Ennis could well be in with a shout.
She's followed by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion David Haye, whose odds shortened after his title-bout win over Nikolay Valuev earlier this month. Haye, who is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Joe Calzaghe's success two years ago, can be backed at [14.5].
Andrew Strauss is to the other serious contender. The England cricket captain, who master-minded the summer Ashes series victory over Australia, can be backed at [19.0], but if England win their final one day international against South Africa on Friday, his price could shorten.
The prestigous award will be announced on Sunday December 13.
