It's been a massive week of news in Super League, with Kevin Sinfield joining Jamie Peacock in the list of outgoing legends at the end of the season. The talismanic Leeds skipper, and my sporting hero, will be converting to Rugby Union to see out the remainder of his career, so expect the Rhinos to be full of intent as the season rolls on. Easter is traditionally one of the biggest occasions in Super League, with the big rivalries across the league all meeting at once, so here's where I reckon your money should be going to firmly put the 'Good' in Friday.
Hull Kingston Rovers to beat Hull FC @ 2.0521/20
Thursday April 2nd, 20:00
This is, without a doubt, one of the fiercest derby matches in the entire sport. While there's more traditional, and more prestiges, this is the one that usually simmers over in to something truly spectacular. The physicality will be ramped up, the tensions will be at breaking point, and both of these will know that this is an ideal occasion to get their season well and truly in to top gear. Hull FC, while usually playing well, have again found themselves narrowly losing matches, and failing to put teams away, just as they had done last campaign. Hull KR, however, are turning in to something of a dark horse, raising their game against the bigger sides, while letting themselves down in some of the matches they may well be favourites in. This might not be the easiest game on the eye, but it'll be an unbelievable battle. For me, Hull KR, despite being away, have the edge in this one. Their ability to turn nothing possession into crucial tries should see them come out on top.
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to beat Catalan Dragons @ 2.77/4
Thursday April 2nd, 20:00
Wakefield, despite their fantastic start, have started to tail off a little, as many expected them to right from the word go. Catalan have being playing some of the best rugby in the league, but only at home, and their tendency to fail when on their travels has come to pass more often than it hasn't this season, just as it has in the past. While on paper the Dragons have all the class in their ranks to put a fair few scores on the board, Wakey aren't ones to be rolled over without a fight, and with a big home crowd and their mental rigidity coming in to play, I think this could be one of the results of the round for the Yorkshire side. This isn't one of the headline fixtures of the week, but if the Wildcats perform like they showed they could at the start of the season, this could still be one of the best.
Widnes Vikings to beat Warrington Wolves @ 3.259/4
Thursday April 2nd, 20:00
Warrington usually leave the inconsistency and poor losses for the playoffs, but this season, their indecision has come a little early. Wolves beat the likes of Leeds convincingly one week, but were absolutely outclassed by a Huddersfield Giants side hitting their stride the next. Their brand of all-attack rugby hasn't really been seen much this season, their backs are struggling to make big impressions on matches, with their forwards usually being the key to their victories so far this season. Widnes, while not the most inspiring squad in the league, have class in the right positions, and have shown their consistency in both victory and defeat this season. Better at home than away, and with the added incentive of the locality of their opposition, Widnes may well raise their game for this encounter. It's not likely to be a blowout win, but perhaps by one kick or a try, the Vikings may well just creep over the line in this one.
Wigan Warriors to beat St Helens by a margin of 1-10pts @ 3.185/40
Friday April 3rd, 20:00
This is probably the biggest game in Super League. Two of the largest sides in the sport, the Lancastrian duopoly have been the most successful sides in the game for quite a long time, and the rivalry hasn't come close to fizzling out. The first meeting since their Grandfinal battle at the end of last season, Wigan will want to put their recent bad form and that Championship loss behind them, with a near sell out at the DW Stadium reportedly ready to take this one in. St Helens, while still the form side and joint league leaders, lost their first game of the season last time out, and haven't really been all that impressive in their last few wins, either. With the narrative that this game has, Wigan are most likely to be the more determined side, and will want to dispel any queries about their temperament after the controversy surrounding them after the Grandfinal red card. This is the game of the weekend, and Wigan will want to put on a show for their fans, so back them for a win in this one.
