The derby games played toward the end of last week were all fantastic adverts for Super League at its most competitive. As predicted in this column, Hull Kingston Rovers made easy work of their city rivals, and Wigan just about got the better of St Helens in a incredibly bruising encounter. With such a quick turnaround in between games, there's a chance for some upsets on Monday, with sides more reliant on fitness and familiarity, rather than any level of specific game planning. That said, here's the smartest places for you to put your money this Easter Monday.
1 - Salford Red Devils to beat Wigan Warriors by a margin of 1-10pts @ 4.216/5
Monday April 6, 15:00
Both of these sides came up with impressive, and vital, victories in the last round of games, but the manner in which they did so couldn't have been more different. Salford overcame an incredibly poor Huddersfield performance away from home, rarely having to get out of first gear to put points on the board. Wigan, however, were in an 80 minute war with St Helens, and will be carrying knocks aplenty, as well as being the much more fatigued of the two sides, both mentally and physically. Salford are becoming one of the form sides in the league, and while their attack has never been in doubt, they now seem to have the defence to match. With the speed of the turnaround between the two games, the home advantage and the edge in fitness, a narrow Salford upset seems like a very shrewd place to put your pennies.
2 - Hull Kingston Rovers to beat Huddersfield Giants by a margin of 11-20pts @ 4.57/2
Monday April 6, 15:00
Although I'm supposed to be impartial, Hull KR are fast becoming one of my favourite sides in the entire competition. They've bought sensibly, with good rugby in mind, and are making a real fist of cementing themselves in the playoff places. Huddersfield, however, are becoming a somewhat infuriating prospect. Over the past few seasons, they've been a fixture at the summit of the league ladder, but this year, they're flitting between the sublime and the ridiculous on an almost weekly basis. Huddersfield have put together some impressive away performances, most notably against Warrington, but Rovers have shown such determination at points this year that I just can't see any complacency sneaking in. This game is between a form side at home, playing rugby that they're enjoying, and an away side struggling to find consistency, so backing Hull KR seems like the only logical option here.
3 - Leeds Rhinos to beat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats by a margin of 31-40pts @ 4.57/2
Monday April 6, 15:00
Top of the league, scoring plenty of points and looking like they're having a ball while doing so, Leeds are really doing their level best to give Sinfield and Peacock the grand send offs they both well and truly deserve. Wakefield, however, after surprising everyone at the start of the season and making those predictions of a bottom placed finish look extremely foolish, have really started to plummet in the past few weeks. Their attacking flair looks stunted, their defence has definitely regressed, and all of a sudden, they're right back towards to the foot of the table where they were expected to be. This is the second local derby this Easter period for Leeds, and with the possibility that Sinfield is to return after missing the past few with a tight hamstring, they'll want to put on a show in front of a sizeable Headingley crowd. There's no doubt that Leeds will win this one, and win big, so backing a large points margin should return plenty.
