Treating poker like a business

The madness of "year end" should now be over for most workers as today marks the start of the new financial year. Companies will have fresh budgets and goals and poker players should be no different.

Whilst I am not setting any more goals, especially financial ones, I will be using today as an excuse to keep meticulous records of my cash and tournament play as well as bonuses and rakeback earned.

In recent weeks I have stopped setting myself silly poker challenges and it is no coincidence that I have enjoyed some of my best results ever since doing this. However, I am a total geek when it comes to numbers and need to have them around me when it comes to poker.

Whilst I am not setting any more goals, especially financial ones, I will be using today as an excuse to keep meticulous records of my cash and tournament play as well as bonuses and rakeback earned. Those of you who read these pages will know I use Hold'em Manager to keep track of my play but I admit that sometimes I delete my database if I have had a particularly bad set of results so I am cheating myself.

By treating the financial aspect of poker as a business and then simply enjoying myself at the tables , I hope to be able to continue my progression as a poker player. One player I know who keeps records of everything, including power used whilst he is "working" is Clarkatroid and if it is good enough for someone who made over £300k from poker last year, then it is good enough for little old Pudding!

So as of now, my total hands played is zero, as is the number of tournaments I have played, a clean slate if you will and over the coming months I am hoping I will be able to report plenty of wins and be able to find once and for all what my most profitable game is. I am also hoping that focussing on the business aspect of things when I am not playing will stop me from doing silly challenges and keep me focussed on the long-term, something I have struggled with in the past.

On a lighter note I have to say a big congratulations to Chris Edwards who has recently bagged himself a job that I am insanely jealous of. Chris is a fellow Betfair blogger and now has an exciting role for the agency, Poker Icons. Whilst I do not know Chris personally, I do know that he is an ideal guy for this venture as he lives and breathes poker. Well done mate, sign me please!

Also, I think I am addicted to grapes! Asda seem to have tons of the little sods in stock right now and I just can't stop eating them! I think I've munched my way through nearly 3kg of them this past week, LMAO! I suppose they're better for you than crisps but surely you can also have too much of a good thing!

Finally, Mrs P should be getting induced on Tuesday so the 10-days late Baby Pud can make an appearance. We have to phone the hospital at 0730 on Tuesday and see if there are enough beds etc and if there are then we should be paid a visit by the stork shortly after!

I'll leave it there for now, as always thanks for reading and best of luck at the tables!
