Over the past week I have hardly sat down at my PC and played poker. To be honest I just couldn't be bothered. I go through phases where I really want to play a ton and then others where I find myself logging on and surfing the net instead.
I do not find SnG enjoyable, not even a little bit so hats off to those of you who grind them out for a living. I tried playing 4-6 at once but finished up playing in sets of 20 just to keep myself sane.
I did stupidly try the Martingale system playing Blackjack and almost lost my entire bankroll in doing so, never again! Basically, I managed to more than double my bankroll but then lost a decent chunk sitting at a couple of crazy NL200 tables when I managed to stack off preflop with KK vs AA and then with a set over set. Bad times.
I won some back, again through Blackjack but then the inevitable downswing started to happen and thankfully I got out in time with $200 withdrawn safely to my bank account. Hand on heart I will not play online Blackjack again unless it is free money through a bonus or something. God knows why I played table games because I never normally do. Brain fart perhaps?
Anyway, after clearing out some old magazines, poker ones not jazz mags before you ask, I found a book my sister gave me as a present which is the SnG book by Collin Moshman. I've already read it but decided to go through it once again to see if I missed anything the first time.
After picking up a few more pointers, I really wanted to try some SnG's out again. I either suck at SnG or run like death, probably a mixture of both to be honest, so wanted to play a few to see if I could turn a profit. I managed to play 100 of the $3.40 turbo games, in two and a half days and came out with an ROI of minus 3.8%! LOL donkaments! A lot of players blame poor runs on running bad but I did run pretty poorly over my first 80 games but then ran like God for my final 20, with an ROI over over 40%, if only I could have done that over the full 100 matches!
Playing those games confirmed that I do not find SnG enjoyable, not even a little bit so hats off to those of you who grind them out for a living. I tried playing 4-6 at once but finished up playing in sets of 20 just to keep myself sane. The main problem with doing this is it becomes almost like a computer game and I like to shoot zombies and blow stuff up when playing computer games, not click my mouse when an annoying sound rings through the speakers to tell me I have to bet or fold.
Over the weekend, the postie delivered another book for me, again a present from my sister and again by Collin Moshman. This time it was his relatively new book on Heads-up play, both cash games and tournament structures. So far I have read around 150 of the 400 pages and it has opened my eyes quite a bit despite there not being anything ground breaking in there.
I have basically self taught myself HUSNG and so far I have been profitable, which is nice. However, after reading part of this book, it appears I have been missing out on a ton of spots where I should be betting or calling and also making some donkey plays too. I can't wait to finish the book, put some of it into practice and then put my own spin on things too.
For the first time in a long while I am excited about my poker. If I am a winner over a decent sample size without proper knowledge of HU theory, what will it be like once I have some new weapons to play with? By May 1 I should have finished and reread some section and then I will hit the tables uber confident. I'll also post my vital statistics here on the same day so you can laugh at my fat self before I go on my fitness kick!
As always, thanks for reading and best of luck at the tables!

Perhaps you are like me in the fact that you need longer blind levels in order to be sucessful. Those turbos are so luck based, but with longer blind levels it gives you better opportunities to play a more patient game.

Hi Jim, thanks for stopping by.
I don't mind turbos in Heads-up format but once you get past 9 players they do take away a lot of the skill factor over the short term.
