McCarthy can point the way to success in his sides fourth round replay against Crystal Palace.
Back Wolves to beat Palace @ 2.9
Back Hearts to beat St Mirren @ 2.1
Lay Atl Madrid to beat Santander @ 1.95
Treble pays @ 12.0
Jaymes Monte has opted for a Europe spanning treble of cup football in a midweek which is otherwise bereft of top class sport....
Bet 1: Football - English FA Cup
Football can be a cruel game. As the indignity of having Simon Jordan as your chairman and Neil Warnock as your manager wasn't bad enough, Crystal Palace have now been slapped with a 10 point penalty and been forced to sell their young starlet Victor Moses for a paltry fee.
The players have coped rather well amidst the furore and lost just once in their last seven league and cup games - away to Newcastle. Now they entertain Wolves in a fourth round replay with a money spinning fifth round tie against Aston Villa awaiting the winner.
However, I feel that the prices are all wrong on this one. The standard Premier League versus Championship argument applies here and the marked improvement of Wolves' defence in the last couple of weeks means that Palace should not be favourites.
Selection: Back Wolves to beat Palace @ [2.9]
Bet 2: Football - Scottish League Cup
Following Hearts is never easy, not least because it is impossible to know what is going on within the club but also because their form is equally erratic on the field. Within hours of Csaba Laszlo being sacked after becoming the latest in an extremely long line of managers to clash with Chairman Vladimir Romanov, former manager Jim Jefferies had been appointed as the returning first team coach.
Jefferies stated that because he supported, played and managed Hearts in the past he knew "how things work in the club". But if eight managers in the last five years under Romanov are anything to go by, Jefferies may find out rather quickly that this is not the club he once knew and loved.
Despite this, Hearts have the nucleus of a decent side. The new manager effect will be in full force this midweek and they can book a place in the Scottish League cup final to put their troubles, at least temporarily, at ease.
Selection: Back Hearts to beat St Mirren @ [2.1]
Bet 3: Football - Copa del Rey
The Copa del Rey has provided a much needed distraction from Atletico Madrid's poor league form this season. Despite languishing in 13th place in the league they are now in the semi-finals of the competition and with Barcelona and Real Madrid already falling by the wayside they have a realistic chance of claiming their first domestic silverware in a decade.
This week's first leg tie against Racing Santander is the first of a triple header between the clubs which will conclude in one of the two making it to the final. They couldn't be much more closely matched over the course of this season - they are separated by just one point in the league table and their meeting on the second day of the season resulted in a share of the points.
I can see this first leg being another evenly matched affair and by that reckoning Atletico are worth taking on at the odds on price tag.
Selection: Lay Atl Madrid to beat Santander @ [1.95]
