Three SmartPlays for a competitive mixed-code card at Clonmel this evening...
Hevelius is allowed to race from just a 4 lb higher mark than his last winning one, and will relish the emphasis being firmly on speed tonight...
Of those with racecourse experience in the 18:20, only Donatis Comet and No Such Number look of any interest, and the former looks to have been found a good opportunity to get off the mark on the Flat. Donatis Coment won 3 bumpers on the spin last summer, and caught the eye on his reappearance at the Curragh earlier this month when fifth in a handicap over this trip, staying on for minimal assistance after his rider was injured in the stalls. He sets a good standard this evening
South South West shaped well in a strong race at Gowran last time and gets the vote in what is admittedly a competitive handicap due off at 18:55. Patrick Flynn's runner stepped up on previous efforts when keeping on well to finish a close-up third to Oh Happy Days in a mile handicap last time, doing well to finish as strongly as he did given how he had raced freely for a long way. He's been raised just 2 lb for that run, will stay this trip, and boasts strong claims.
Hevelius (20:30) took the extended two mile handicap hurdle on this card last year and, with a recent run on the Flat under his belt, is expected to get back to winning ways in the corresponding event this evening. He may have been a notch or two below his best after that win last term, but he's allowed to race from just a 4 lb higher mark than his last winning one, and will relish the emphasis being firmly on speed tonight.
