All Aged Stakes Preview: Rebel favoured
Head of Timeform Australia Gary Crispe goes through Saturday's big race.
"On his latest run, Rebel Dane beat all bar current sprint sensation Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes here a fortnight back."
The time-honoured All Aged Stakes, first run in 1866, is one of the features on the final day of Sydney's Autumn Racing Carnival at Randwick. The race has attracted an interesting field headed by talented sprinter Rebel Dane and other Group 1 winners such as Shamexpress and Steps In Time.
On Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, Rebel Dane is the clear selection for the race ahead of Steps In Time and Tiger Tees, with the Japanese mare Hanna's Goal a value chance at odds.
Rebel Dane captured his first Group 1 success last year in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield, defeating a handy line-up that included Fontelina and Speediness. That was Rebel Dane's third run at 1400m, the other two including a head defeat to Pierro in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes.
On his latest run, Rebel Dane beat all bar current sprint sensation Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes here a fortnight back. It was no disgrace to have his colours lowered by the horse rated by Timeform as the best sprinter in the world and confirms that Rebel Dane is at the top of his game.
Steps In Time was down the field in the T J Smith Stakes, floundering in the heavy ground, but before that had made all in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.
There was much to like about the performance, not least the weight she carried. Only two mares- Sunline and Emancipation- had previously lumbered more than 56kg to victory in the Coolmore and both of them went on to win the All Aged.
Hanna's Goal has not had much luck in her two runs in Australia, firstly in the Coolmore Classic then in the Doncaster, but this afternoon could see her get into the frame. Although not well weighted under the conditions of this race, she will hopefully reap the benefit of those two runs here and with Rawiller in the saddle, she is a knock-out hope if the race unfolds to her benefit.
Proven Group 1 performer Shamexpress is an interesting runner. The 2013 Newmarket Handicap winner has not been far away in four runs this campaign but continues to struggle to regain winning form. Here he steps up to 1400m for the first time since his three-year-old days and he's been suggesting of late that he's better equipped for the distance now than he was then.
Enjoy the race.
