The first big-race action of the weekend also comes from the Southern Hemisphere, with two Group 1s in the form of the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield and the George Main Stakes at Randwick.
Some cracking punting conundrums in Britain this weekend, but there is also top-level action from as far-flung locations as Australia, Germany and Pennsylvania...
It's rare that the focal point of UK racing will fall on Scotland, but this weekend sees Ayr's biggest Flat meeting of the year, with the Ayr Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups all racing on the same day for the first time. It's testament to the pulling power of the meeting that it can produce three highly-competitive sprint handicaps (with quality of competitor ranging from fairly useful to near-Group class) in one afternoon, and most member of the betting public would happily take just one winner from the three events.
One of the great things about the Ayr Gold Cup is how it mixes yards of the north and south like few other big events in the calendar, and this year's renewal looks a reasonable case in point. Current favourite Our Jonathan is trained in Yorkshire, next best Hawkeyethenoo is based with Jim Goldie near Glasgow, with the pair followed in the market by Maarek (Ireland) and Sholaan (Newmarket). There are 23 other runners due to line up, with the same number going in both consolation races beforehand. If a big-scenario wasn't enough to overcome, all indications are that the ground will be very testing, meaning that Saturday's winner will truly have earned all the plaudits they receive.
There's also a good card at Newbury, the feature being the Mill Reef Stakes, a Group 2 over six furlongs for juveniles. The undercard might be peppered with ambitiously-named Group races (the Arc Trial is anything but that and the World Trophy tends to have a suspiciously British feel), but they are still good contests which throw up winners that ultimately prove up to competing at a higher level.
At around the same time as sprinters are ploughing through the mud at Ayr, South Africa's richest race on the sand, the Emerald Cup, will be taking place at the Vaal. Some of the region's premier jockeys, trainers and indeed horses are represented in the race, and if you want an inside track on what to bet in the big race or on the undercard read Andrew Riddell's thoughts here.
The first big-race action of the weekend also comes from the Southern Hemisphere, with two Group 1s in the form of the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield and the George Main Stakes at Randwick. The Spring Carnival really is in full flow now, and Head of Timeform Australia Gary Crispe has written previews for both of the big races to keep you on top of how the Carnival is developing.
Saturday evening (for UK readers at least) sees a historic event in the north-east of the United States as Parx Racing plays hosts to its first ever Grade 1 contest, the Cotillion Stakes, and it has attracted a couple of genuine top-level performers in Questing and My Miss Aurelia. The Pennsylvania Derby is also due to take place around half an hour later, and our North American expert Graeme North has previewed both pieces for you in this article.
As usual, it's a calmer affair on Sunday aside from Continental Europe, with the Preis von Europa at Baden-Baden the feature event. Like many of Germany's big races, it's dominated by the home team, but fear not if you're not an expert in all things German racing as our International Editor Chris Williams has compiled a run-down of all the runners here.
