The tall, angular Many Clouds always appealed as the type to be seen to great effect over fences, and he has created a taking impression on both starts over the larger obstacles, already running to a higher level than he managed over hurdles.
Just quite what Many Clouds achieved in pure form terms when winning on his chasing debut at Carlisle is open to some debate with the favourite, Holywell, running no sort of race, but Oliver Sherwood's novice impressed with a bold round of jumping, showing a good technique for one so inexperienced.
Many Clouds looked worth a go at a higher level following that Carlisle success, and he enhanced his reputation, despite tasting defeat, when finding only one too good at Haydock on Friday. Many Clouds looked sure-footed over his obstacles, measuring them well, and he held every chance as they swung for home, but it was soon apparent that the promising Black Thunder was travelling better and was going to prevail. Many Clouds stuck to his task in determined fashion, though, showing a good attitude and keeping on well in the manner of a horse that will be suited by at least three miles.
From the family of Back on Line, who was placed in the four-mile National Hunt Chase, Many Clouds possesses plenty of stamina and that allied with his impressive jumping looks sure to stand him in good stead. He should be capable of winning more races.
Timeform Notebook:
Merlin's Wish confirmed the distinct promise of his runner-up effort at Chepstow when winning a four-mile event at Hexham last week. Upped markedly in trip, Merlin's Wish relished the increased emphasis on stamina, always travelling well before staying on strongly in the closing stages. The race itself wasn't a strong event but he possesses a good profile and can register further success.
Straidnahanna had shaped well behind Oscar Rock on debut, and he once again ran well in the face of a stiff task, finishing fourth to Spirit of Shankly. He can win once his sights are lowered slightly.
Shutthefrontdoor - Built on debut promise and enhanced reputation despite losing at Cheltenham.
Straidnahanna - Has twice shaped well in strong novice events.
Merlin's Wish - Unexposed staying handicap chaser who should win again.
Whisper - Remains well treated over hurdles but has the physique to take well to chasing.
Close House - Once again shaped as if three miles was too far; will be suited by return to shorter.
Ifandbutwhynot - Things didn't pan out at Cheltenham but sure to remain of interest when emphasis is on speed.
Many Clouds - Genuine type that has taken well to chasing, already showing improved form.
