Ahead of the publication of their flagship Annual Racehorses of 2013 in March, Timeform have released their Global Rankings for 2013.

Topping the rankings on a Timeform rating of 134 are leading females Black Caviar and Treve, along with gelding Wise Dan, the top performer in North America for the second year running.

Black Caviar added a further three wins in her native Australia to her record in 2013, stretching her unbeaten run to 25 before being retired in April after an unblemished career. Her peak rating of 136 (recorded in 2012) makes her the joint-highest rated filly or mare (alongside Allez France and Habibti) aged three or above in Timeform's 65-year history.

The French-trained Treve also has a flawless record, and she recorded an outstanding performance for a three-year-old filly when beating Orfevre by five lengths in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Treve will be back in 2014, when a trip to Royal Ascot is reportedly on the cards.

Wise Dan, who looked at least as good as ever in landing six of his seven outings in the latest season, is also expected to stay in training as a seven-year-old in 2014, when an attempt to match Goldikova's feat of three wins in the Breeders' Cup Mile will presumably be on the agenda.

The miling division was undoubtedly the strongest domestically in 2013, with the Richard Hannon-trained duo, Toronado (133) and Olympic Glory (132), along with Dawn Approach (132) and Farhh (131) all producing top-class performances over the distance.

Farhh also produced the year's best performance over a mile and a quarter when beating Cirrus des Aigles (130) and Derby winner Ruler of The World (128) in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on his final outing.

Aidan O'Brien had another leading three-year-old over middle distances in Magician (128p), who came back from an absence to pip The Fugue (128) in the Breeders' Cup Turf. Having missed much of the summer, Magician has the potential to do better still as a four-year-old (hence the 'p' on his rating).

The title of best three-year-old middle-distance male in Europe went to French Derby winner and Arc third Intello (129).

A late addition to the Global Rankings was the Japanese-trained sprinter Lord Kanaloa (133), whose performance in winning his second successive Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin in December (when beating Irish raider Sole Power (126) by five lengths) ranks as the best in the race's 15-year history, beating Sacred Kingdom's 131 in 2007. Lord Kanaloa retires having compiled a tremendous record in Group 1 races in the Far East.

Horses trained in the US again dominate the list of top juveniles, providing six of the top 10.

Shared Belief, trained in California by Jerry Hollendorfer, leads the way on 123p after an unbeaten three-race campaign that culminated with a runaway success in the Grade 1 Cashcall Futurity over an extended mile at Hollywood Park in December. Shared Belief races as though he will stay further, though, with the classics in mind, he still has to prove he is as effective on dirt having been confined to synthetic surfaces so far.

Britain didn't have any juveniles in the top 10 in the 2012 Global Rankings but are much better represented this time around.

National Stakes winner Toormore (121p) led the way domestically, closely followed by Hot Streak (120p), who lost out to stablemate Astaire (115) in the Middle Park but produced a tremendous performance on the clock when running out a five-length winner of the Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot the previous week. Hot Streak is a sprinter to look out for in 2014.

Aidan O'Brien's War Command also ends the year on 120p following notable wins in the Coventry and the Dewhurst.
