Ryan Moore: Mekong the pick of my four Saturday rides at York

Betfair Ambassador Ryan Moore
Will Ryan Moore be smiling after any of his four rides at York on Saturday?

Just the four rides for Ryan Moore at York on Saturday afternoon but he has a couple of strong chances including Mekong in the Listed race...

"He is clearly progressive, and the step down in trip shouldn't bother him in these conditions. He is probably the one to beat."

Workable mark but this is a tough handicap

14:25 - Aces

He didn't run too badly for me over 6f at Newmarket on Saturday and has been dropped 2lb for it. He clearly needs to show a lot more than that to be winning this 20-runner handicap but the cheek pieces that he wore for the first time last Saturday are left off, and he ran well over 7f in testing conditions at Chester last month, so I think today's different test could suit him better, too. He is on a fair enough mark if it all clicks, but I imagine plenty of the others will be saying the same.

Conditions are fine and we're the one to beat

15:00 - Mekong

This is a pretty good Listed race, tight-knit on ratings, and there are plenty to fear. I rode Gold Mount to finish fourth in the Dubai Gold Cup last time and he'd be a huge threat to all on his Hong Kong form, while three or four others in here have solid enough claims, too. But we had to be delighted by the way that Mekong shaped behind Dee Ex Bee in the Henry VII at Sandown on his reappearance, and we know he handles testing ground very well should York get more rain. He is clearly progressive, and the step down in trip shouldn't bother him in these conditions. He is probably the one to beat.

In form and progressive but draw a concern

15:35 - Blown By Wind

He probably has as good a chance as any in this big-field sprint handicap, but being drawn one of 22 may not prove to be ideal. But we will see. He has gone up 3lb for his good second over 7f at Newmarket on Saturday - and he races off a career-high mark here as a result - but he is in-form, progressive and a heavy-ground winner as well, so he is adaptable as regards the going. He has his chance, and the step back down to 6f will be no problem.

Likely to improve from Yarmouth debut

16:05 - St Ives

William's horses are going well and you have to expect this colt will improve up on his debut Yarmouth fifth. He will need to - though I rode the winner of that Yarmouth race and it was probably very fair form, actually - but his sire Cable Bay is doing well and St Ives may appreciate the bit more dig he will encounter here.
