Ryan Moore: Exclusive views on all my Saturday rides at Newmarket
Ryan has a full book of rides at Newmarket this Saturday and you can read his thoughts on all seven here...
"There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic, and the step down from 7f is also very much in Eastern Impact's favour. This is his trip."
Penalty an issue but Octave may still hit high notes
The betting suggested she had been showing something at home before her debut at Lingfield, and she delivered there. She didn't win by far but she had a previous winner well beaten in third and you have to expect she will have benefitted from that opening run. The downside is the 6lb penalty for that novice win, and she meets some expensive and well-bred newcomers like Khaadem, Chance and Calyx in here, but hopefully her experience will even things out.
Trip and track are perfect for Eastern Impact
He clearly didn't run up to his best over 7f at York last time but the handicapper has dropped him another 2lb and he now looks a well-treated horse if he can return to close to his best. He actually ran decent races on his first two starts this season, not beaten far at all, and he has a very good record on this course. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic, and the step down from 7f is also very much in his favour. This is his trip.
Competition looks tough but I give my mount a chance
There are a few interesting and unexposed horses in here, and progressive too, and my horse has more miles on the clock than most. But he ran better than his finishing position suggests at Epsom last week, and the handicapper has given him a chance by dropping him to 103. A reproduction of his earlier fifth at York would probably see him competitive, actually.
Byron not without a chance
I rode him when he finished second at Doncaster last season and I liked him there, so it was good to see him return to that kind of form when just touched off at Haydock last time. He has gone up 2lb, which makes life tough in such a competitive race, but you have to give him each-way chances.
I don't know anything about her but she is a well-related Declaration Of War filly. The interesting one in this race is undoubtedly Aim Of Artemis. I rode her when she won at Leicester last season, and Godolphin went to seven figures to pick her up at the Ballymacoll dispersal in December. They will be hoping she is up to winning this, 7lb penalty or not, and she holds a Coronation Stakes entry.
Dr could be in good order
Dr Richard Kimble
I'm getting on him for the first time but it looks as though the step up to this trip for the first time really suited him at Doncaster last time. This looks a better race and he is 7lb higher, but let's hope he is on a winning roll.
An interesting race for Aclimatise
This looks a good 0-100 handicap, and you can make a case for them all. My horse ran well under a 5lb penalty at Leicester last time, but he is higher in the weights and this is a better class of race. Furthermore, he is unproven over this 1m2f trip and it is not certain to suit on pedigree. But the trainer knows what he is doing, and he certainly shaped as if it was well worth a try on run-style from Leicester last time, and the return to a quicker surface will suit.
