Ryan Moore: The thoughts on my two Group race rides at Deauville
Ryan Moore is in France on Sunday afternoon to ride in two Group races for Aidan O'Brien, and here he gives his exclusive thoughts on Land Force and Rhododendron...
"She is a triple Group 1-winner who will give these plenty to think about if on her A-game, but clearly she has questions to answer after her last two runs."
- Ryan Moore on Rhododendron
My colt is on the up but Polyanna the one to beat
14:45 - Land Force
There looks to be a fair bit of depth to this race - we have the Papin 1-2-3, and the possibly unlucky fifth, Simply Striking, from that contest, too - but I suppose you have to argue that Pretty Polyanna is the stand-out after what she did at Newmarket. Immediately after the race, you possibly didn't know what to make of the contest as a whole - it was a messy race with a lot of trouble - but the 7-length runner-up, Angel's Hideaway, has come out and easily won the Group 3 Princess Margaret at Ascot.
There are plenty of dangers to choose from though, and Aidan has a decent shot with Land Force. He is a colt on the up judged on his defeat of Marie's Diamond in the Richmond at Goodwood, where he did it well for me.
Need to put some recent poor runs behind us
15:20 - Rhododendron
She was obviously very disappointing at Goodwood, and that came after another flat performance at Royal Ascot. But Aidan is obviously happy with her, and don't lose sight of the fact that just three starts ago she was beating the Sussex Stakes winner Lightning Spear in the Lockinge.
She is a triple Group 1-winner who will give these plenty to think about if on her A-game, but clearly she has questions to answer after her last two runs. Maybe, a bit more cut may suit her if the ground rides on the easy side, but she is effective on quick and soft alike, so it is probably more about her form.
Lady Frankel, a close third to my filly in the Prix de l'Opera, looks dangerous after her comeback run, while Bateel and Urban Fox also bring Group 1-winning form to the table, so Rhododendron will have to near her best to win this. Hopefully, the first-time blinkers will bring her back to that level.
